Located at the midpoint between Lake Kussharo and Lake Mashu, this is a national park that will not be missed. Parking is 500yen for both Lake Mashu and Iouzan so make sure you allocate sufficient time to visit both places in a day.

We stopped on our trip and we were pleased with the scenery. It looks as if you step on some planet. The ground is grey and there is a lot of steam and yellow sulfur on the ground. The smell is terrible! But it makes...More

You can smell the pungent sulfur once you get out of the car. The large number of rhododendron plants were unfortunately not in bloom yet but it would make a pretty sight next to the bare mountain spouting vapor.

The smell of sulphur permeates the air at this active volcano. You can walk up to where the steam comes out, and see the yellow sulphuric deposits. A souvenir shop and bathroom are nearby.

some people say the sulphur smelled around may harm visitors health. but some say the amount exposing from the volcano is insufficient.

Loved this place. Steam roars from the ground. It reeks of sulphur. Nice visitor centre with good coffee and a very good shop. Sure, it's a bit touristy, but what a great place to see geology writ large.
