I recently visited this beautiful castle and thought it was amazing. The view from the roof of the surrounding countryside is breathtaking and well worth the climb. On the way up you will pass the Musician's Hall which has extraordinary acoustics, a magnificent hall with a high vaulted ceiling which houses displays of old instruments and tapestries. Beside that you... More

This site comes across as quite ramshackle at the wooden shed/ ticket office where a collection of farm vehicles and dogs greet you. On entering through the gatehouse we got the impression things had been put away for the winter, or is it just always like this? A couple of towers in varying states of dissrepair are passed as you... More

We visited Puivert Chateau some 10 years ago, and I was not overly impressed (possibly distracted by the fact that not all of our party at that time were keen on a chateau visit). This time round we had a 3 year old grandson in tow, who loved the atmosphere of the castle, particularly all the mysterious furnished rooms and... More

It's well worth the trip to see this chateau, which has been extensively preserved. The Musicians hall, chapel and dining room inside the grand tower have real atmosphere. It's a shame there's not more explanation of Cathar history available onsite.

This has to be my favourite of the cathar castles I've seen so far, as other people have noted the view is astounding but the walls are only knee height so watch the little ones. There is lighting up the spiral staircases and each level has its purpose explained - Chapel, kitchen, entertaining area etc 5 mins walk from the... More

This cathare castle is less famous than for example Peyrepertuse, but it's very nice too. The main tower has two very interesting rooms (one with stone figures of musicians, which is quite rare) and you can go on the !roof top! (you might say that this isn't anything special, but there's almost no ledge (so be careful) and you have... More

I'm not convinced this is the best place to take young children. Whilst the courtyard is a broad grass area, the keep (or donjon) has some rather precarious stairs that young children could easily slip on. In addition you suddenly find yourself on the roof and, if it is anything like our visit (middle of August), it is very windy!... More

A great place to visit for a morning or afternoon. Lots of history and information as you tour around. Lovely views across Puivert and beyond.

This castle has good views, fascinating rooms and history and despite some attempts in the past is unspoilt by making it a cheesy tourist destination. The drive to the car parking is a little challenging and the road is in poor condition. You will not need much more than 30 mins there but if you took a picnic it would... More

This was just one stop on my tour through Cathar country. This chateau was the highlight for me. Older and nicer-looking than the chateau de Rennes. Better weather here than at the cloud-covered Montsegur castle (though that may be a coincidence). Although the chateau in Foix is also nice, the more ruinous appearance of Puivert appeals more to me. Only... More
