Château de Tanlay: Renaissance jewel in Burgundy

Beautiful ensemble of the 16th and 17th centuries, built in the heart of the village by the family of the Admiral de Coligny, completed by a relative of Mazarin, preserved in the same family for three centuries. Remarkable architecture, walk along the Canal perspective, Renaissance fresco and trompe-l'oeil, furnished and decorated rooms.

We had written material in English so we pretty much turned a deaf ear to the French guide. The small brochure in English was OK but sparse on the details that bring this chateau to life. The building was not overwhelming by French chateau standards but certainly impressive. The art work was remarkable and the grounds were lovely.

The outside of Tanlay is truly beautiful, picture perfect indeed. There's one entrance to the chateau, through a couple of arches, over the moat. And mid-afternoon someone had decided that was the best time for the French Chuckle Brothers to shift a cherry-picker through from the courtyard side to us. This involved more shouting than movement (to me, to you),... More

Fantastic visit. We fell lucky and had an English speaking guide. He was very knowledgeable and made the visit very enjoyable. Well worth a visit. Very good value.

A beautiful castle, nice park. The visit of the park and others buildings from outside, stables for instance is free of charge. Conversely the castle visit is expensive,it's only guided in French. They show you a little part inside the building ,and it's not very remarkable.

The Exhibition 2015 of the Castel with art works of Bengt Lindström, Barthélémy Toguo, Coco Fronsac and Cypien Tokoudagba is unique. This mixture of European and African contemporary Art is a must to see!

The chauteau has wonderful architectural detail and marvelous stories to tell about the French religious wars, especially in the tower room at the end. Our guide was a font of information about French history.

We were staying on pur boat at the lovely port at Tanlay. We decided to walk around the grounds. They are lovely and the view of the chateau is superb. We did not pay to go in the grounds. There was a walking event going on with lots of people milling about. Great little tea and book cafe outside the... More

We visited Tanlay some years ago and were so frustrated by the gloomy entrance and dreary descriptions of the then (male - sorry!) guide (for example, he drew our attention to the "interesting" presence of the owner's Wellington boots in the hall!) that we escaped early in the tour and missed most of the visit. We returned this week on... More

Tanlay Chateau is in a peaceful setting and has great charm. The architecture is exactly what you would expect of a typical french chateau. Tours are guided and at specific times. The ticket office opens shortly before the tour starts but you can wander around the courtyard area beforehand and admire the beautiful facade and surroundings. The tour is in... More
