About
One of the top twenty in Simon Jenkins's book 'England's Thousand Best Houses'. Idyllically set in the heart of an ancient deer park, below the South Downs, the Elizabethan house contains an important collection of needlework, paintings and furniture. The spectacular Long Gallery is the third longest in England. The gardens include a four-acre Walled Garden with stunning herbaceous borders, plus Pleasure Grounds. Parham has always been a well-loved family home, and only three families have lived here since its foundation stone was laid in 1577. Its tranquillity and timeless beauty have changed little over the years. Now owned by a charitable trust, the house is lived in by Lady Emma Barnard, her husband James and their family. Open from Easter Sunday until the end of October. Please see the website for days and times.

Disappointed
Sep 2021
Have visited Parham many times in the passed, and was really shocked at how many of the flower beds and plants are being choked with bindweed, the Rose garden was closed as they were dealing with it there, but it didn’t seem the rest was being addressed as the bind weed was so bad it has been growing quite a while.
Otherwise a very beautiful place to visit, great tea rooms and grounds just sad about the plants that seemed Neglected. Hopefully they can get this under control and bring the gardens back to its original glory.

Thank you for your review. We are sorry to hear you were disappointed by your visit to the Gardens on this occasion. The issues with bindweed and other pernicious weeds have been longstanding for many years and we are determined to address them once and for all. Our Garden Team (under the leadership of Andrew Humphris, our excellent new Head Gardener) are working incredibly hard to eradicate these weeds. More information about the project can be found on our website. https://www.parhaminsussex.co.uk/plans_garden_2021/ This work will take some time, but we hope that you will continue to visit Parham to see the process take effect. We have horticulturally ambitious plans and are confident our Gardens are at the start of a very positive new chapter and will soon be better than ever.

Beautiful historic house of great interest - let down by rubbish catering
Aug 2021
The house is beautiful, with a really impressive collection of pictures. The Docents were all very well informed and helpful, and clearly enthusiastic about the house.
I think some parts of the garden were not quite as full on as they should have been, although this was explained (trouble with bindweed)
However, my biggest quibble, and what cut into our enjoyment was the ' catering' in the Mower Shed.
The blackboard claims a "RANGE of OPTIONS" for Gluten Free diners. This was a compete lie. There is ONE cake which is gluten free, so that can't really be described as a "range", as it is only one "Option" or perhaps 2 - take it or leave it. I left it.
They (the naked food company) were completely unapologetic about this.
Therefore, I have marked the experience down because I was hungry all afternoon - my experience was undermined by this shortsighted approach to hospitality.
I understand there is another restaurant which hasn't been open in 2021 - I completely get why. I won't be visiting again until checking the menu of this restaurant when it does open.

Go to parham when it is open.
The tour is very good and the history is rich.
The house is in good condition and the museum in the long gallery on the top floor is very interesting.

Poor coffee

Parham is very charming and historical,. Beautiful gardens and pond. Only downside Is the dreadful Mower Shed coffee, no flavour nor strength. Pljease buy some top class coffee in and a real machine to make the cappuccinos.

GARDENS - Overall a disappointment……much of the garden is a mess.
Aug 2021 • Couples
We live locally and have been season ticket holders for many years. Most years we were regular visitors for a pleasant walk around the gardens. No more - we’ve been three times in the last six months. The main interest in the gardens are within the walled garden - much of these are fallow and being treated for bindweed, with much evidence of bindweed in the remaining beds. It’s just a bit of a mess which will undoubtedly take years to tackle.I don’t think I would be very happy if I’d paid for one off entry to the gardens (and I was a little surprised to hear the lady in the kiosk on our most recent visit tell the couple in front of us who wanted to pay gift aid that it’s much easier not to! Perhaps Parham doesn’t need the additional funds).

On a positive note, the catering in the garden is much improved on the poor catering that used to be in the cafe in the house. The staff are friendly and welcoming and the quality, choice, and value for money much better.

Just be aware if ticket at the time of your booking is Gardens Only that several large borders are fallow while gardeners deal with pernicious weeds. Overall although it was quite a nice visit, we didn’t think it gave value for money even at concession rate. May 30 2021

The web site said that it was open but having travelled for two hours we arrived to find it closed until Easter. Not helpful. We will not be going back!

Thank you for your message. We have double checked the information that was displayed on our website and are confident that the times and dates shown there were correct. On the last day of our season, on the 13th October, we also added an additional banner to each page of the website stating that Parham would be closed from the 14th October and would re-open on Sunday 12th April 2020. We are really sorry to hear that you had a wasted journey to Parham and for the inconvenience this caused. Despite this unfortunate experience, we do hope you will decide to visit us again in the future.
