I was suprised how remote the American cemetery felt, being located in St.James, and it would be very difficult to visit without your own transport I believe.
There was ample parking outside the cemetery, which was good news.
Its important to remember that the cemetery was only open from the morning until 17:00.
The place was lovely and quiet, and well laid out, with a chapel located at the head of the cemetery. It was interesting to see the distance between grave stones, which was quite large incomparison to the commonwealth graves.
Within the chapel is some information murals on the D-Day landings.
Keep an eye out for the 2 Medal of honour recipients, which standout due to them having their grave stones engraved in gold lettering.

Beautifully kept cemetery.
Such an emotional visit, to see the lines of graves, (average age of 21... ) and to read the story of the reclamation of ground through sheer bravery and sacrificial slaughter.
Every child and adult should visit to appreciate life and honour.

My uncle is buried here. Be sure to request the special service they perform for any direct descendants visiting a grave site. The staff will fill the letters with wet sand from Omaha Beach, place an American flag and play taps. All very moving

Though it is not visited as much as the American cemetery in Normandy, this one outside of Saint-James is just as grand and goes to show you that those who lost their lives in WWII are not forgotten. The cemetery grounds are kept immaculate. The staff is readily available to answer questions and assist as needed. The staff has a vast knowledge of the history of the battles in and around the area. Highly recommend asking the staff to visit the top of the tower in the chapel to look out over the country side and take in the cemetery from a bird’s eye view. You can see all the way to Mont Saint Michel from the tower. Well worth a visit.

We traveled to the Brittany American Cemetery in St James to visit our Great Uncle's grave. He died in Normandy the night before he was to be pulled off of the front lines and the family decided that his final resting place should be beside his comrades in arms. Since he was buried in France no one in the family had visited the grave. When we had the chance to go to France we decided to pay our respects so we contacted the cemetery to find out where in the cemetery he was buried and they bent over backwards to help us, offering to find transportation and lodging if we needed it. Since we were unsure of exactly what day we were going to visit we declined this help but they told us to check in at the office when we arrived.
We were unsure what we would find on our arrival but were pleased and touched to find a beautifully manicured and maintained grounds with a small memorial chapel at one end. We stopped at the office but no one was in since it was lunch time so we proceeded to the grave and placed our flowers and flags. We wandered around the beautiful gardens and into the chapel. As we were preparing to leave the caretaker found us and when she found out that we had family buried there she returned with us to the grave and rubbed sand from Omaha Beach into the headstone to make the writing stand out. She added an American flag to the marker and offered to play taps before going back to the office and asking us to stop before we left.
When we arrived at the office she presented us with a packet about the cemetery as well as information on our relative's service record and death. They went and retrieved the larger flag and presented it to us to take home which we presented to his brother who is still alive. I will always love our trip to France but our visit to St James will always be a sad but moving experience I will treasure for the rest of my life.

Designed like American cemetery at Omaha beach. Each American grave adopted by a French family because they are grateful for assistance in WWII. Very touching story of cemetery origin. Cemetery is immaculate. Worth the trip.

After staying overnight at Compte Regis' Chateau Du Bouceel nearby, we visited this cemetery, where we laid hydrangeas at his soldier's grave site.
We had previously visited the Omaha cemetery, plus other cemeteries on the Western Front, and we found this one to be as meticulously maintained as the others.

The American Cemetery at St James is an extraordinary place. The atmosphere is at the same time peaceful, and sad. I am not a spiritual person, but at this place I had a spiritual experience. It was difficult to hold back the tears as I walked through the row upon row of individual memorials. What a waste, but how grateful are we that they made that sacrifice! Puts things into perspective a bit!

First visit the chapel and appreciate the scale of WW2 then go outside and survey the field of crosses and stars and thank them all for what they did. When you look at the wall of remembrance wonder why a boy from Oregon died in the fields of France. This is a humbling and moving visit and not for the faint hearted but is a must do if you value your freedom. It's worth finding the corner of the nearby cemetery in Montjoie where the eight Morrocan Muslims are remembered for their part in the great epic of WW2.

This beautiful cemetery commemorates the American loss at Mortain. While less known and more remote than the American Cemetery at Omaha Beach, this peaceful, reverent cemetery underscores our Country's honor and gratitude. This elegantly laid-out cemetery with a beautiful chapel and moving quotations is a bit difficult to find, so it is best you use GPS.
I felt these boys receive many less visitors than those buried at Omaha Beach and I was honored to pay my respects to them by walking among their graves.

Looking for a guide/driver for my 70+ aged aunt, who will be docked in Rouen with the Viking River Cruise 8/30/19 - 9/1/19. Renting a vehicle and driving herself is not the best option. Any thoughts

It is a 250km three hour drive from Rouen to St James, I would suggest looking on line for a taxi firm in the Rouen area who might be willing to undertake this journey. Public transport is not an option.

My uncle is buried in this cemetery. My wife and I would like to attend the 2019 Memorial Day ceremonies. Can you give us recommendations on mode of travel, accommodations, etc.?

Is it possible to find out which French family cares for my uncle's grave in the Brittany Cemetery? We hope to visit there in the next year and would like to thank them.

Hi I live just up the road from this Cemetary and as far as i understand the graves are looked after by full time French gardeners employed by the American Battle Monuments Comission. The grass and borders are immaculate.. Hope that helps

Traveling to Paris in October, what type of transportation will I need to go from Paris France to the cemetery.
Written 23 May 2016
You have to take a train from Paris Montparnasse station to Rennes and then a Bus from Rennes to Saint james - the cemetary is on the outskirts of the town so take a taxi Its not too difficult to do this in a day but be prepared you will be very tired Its best to try to stay overnight if u can
So to sum up:
Train from Paris Montparnasse to Rennes
Bus from Rennes to Saint James
Taxi from Saint James to the American War Cemetary
