About

We went on a weekend around mid-day and had the building all to ourselves. The surrounding park area was also not busy. It was an informative stop and a beautiful building. Even better was how low-key the visit was compared to other chateaus in the area. Would highly recommend.

Hello Lute2244 and thank you for this nice comment, we are delighted that the visit of the Domaine has pleased you. Indeed, the castle of Candé is very original compared to the other castles of the Val de Loire: a theme 30 years, an incredible modernity and a beautiful love story to crown the whole ! Looking forward to welcoming you back to the Domaine,

A charming chateau of the typical Loire chateau beaten track, but very much well worth the visit. We went on a showery June afternoon and we were the only ones in the chateau at that time, although a large group were arriving as we left. Why so good? Well this chateau saw an event some called the marriage of the century between the Duke of Windsor (former King Edward viII) and Wallis Simpson. This wonderful home richly decorated in typical 1930's style has elements of the Windsor marriage throughout the numerous rooms, but there is also an undercurrent of intrigue on the last owners (before the French state) the Bedeaux family - wealthy franco American family. the rooms come alive with music as you step through and if you are as lucky as we were you have the place to yourselves even having the infamous Royal couples photo on the balcony steps as we did! At €7 for adult ticket well worth it. The grounds (which are free to roam) are well maintained.

We could only view from the park as we had our dog with us. However it looked lovely and we had read up on the history before visiting....Edward and Wallis Simpson. There would have been no slumming it living here! Wish we could have looked inside but understand why. Enjoyed the views.

We had such a fabulous family time at Domaine de Candé on the first day of our holiday in Monts, that we returned to spend the last day here also. It may not be as well known or as large as other chateaux, but in my opinion it is perfect for visiting with children and combines very well a site-seeing experience with relaxed family time. There was so much space for the children to have fun playing games in this picturesque setting and we enjoyed a very pleasant picnic in the grounds on both occasions. We really enjoyed exploring the gardens and the fascinating and engaging artwork. The chateau is very welcoming with no "keep off the grass" signs, which we had seen at some other chateaux. Inside, the chateau itself is beautiful and very interesting, with it's links to our British Royal Family's history; I would highly recommend a visit inside - I could not get enough photos of the mosaic bathrooms, which I adored! The innovative interior design by the Bedaux family, who were the last owners of the chateau, is truly pleasurable to see and also to imagine the 1930's era for the residents and their guests. We have visited several chateaux this week during our stay in the Loire, but our girls (aged 12, 9 and 7 years) have said that their days at Domaine de Candé have been their favourite!

This is where The Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson married in 1937. When we arrived we were the only visitors and had the chateau all to ourselves. This was wonderful as we could take our time looking at the rooms that were connected to the wedding. Good audio tour and lots to see. Small gift shop combined with a coffee machine and a very pleasant and helpful member of staff who was a delight to talk to. Highly recommend if you are in the Loire.

The chateau is set in a very tranquil area high up giving an excellent view of the beautiful countryside. On our visit there were very few visitors and the large car park was almost empty. From the grounds a viaduct can be seen in the distance. For any families visiting the chateau there are some interesting items in the ground including a dragon with moving jaw and eyes. In the chateau there are many exhibits and memorabilia including the dress Mrs Simpson wore for her marriage to Edward. The rooms were exquisite. On a mundane note the public toilets were excellent!

Very interesting as the place where Edward, the abdicated King of England, married Wallis Simpson, the American. Gives a good sense of how the adapted to 'normal' life.

We visited the Domaine de Cande on a rainy Wednesday and really enjoyed it. We almost had the place to ourselves. After so much medieval history at other chateaus, it was great to visit this place and hear about its history with Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson. Many interesting rooms and some of those most beautiful bathrooms I’ve ever seen! Grounds looks pretty but we didn’t visit as the weather was rainy.

The Chateau and grounds are set in tranquil surroundings, but it is becoming a poular tourist attraction mainly due to the Chateau's interesting history, where the abdicated King Edward VIII married Mrs. Simpson. Randolph Churchill witnessed the event. The chateau is well worth a visit. It hoĺds a collection of the bride and groom's clothes and many pieces of interesting articles relating to their lives and the times. A lovely region, beautiful park like grounds and excellent for walking. A gem of of English/French history.

We followed our satnav and went through woodlands along narrow roads, wondering whether we were at the right place
We were. Firstly we encountered a modern art installation with bird sounds as you approached
In the grounds, much to our grandson's delight (and then all of us!!) there were swinging pods in the trees. We all had fun with these and then with a wooden dragon with moving eyes etc
We looked ut over the lovely view down towards a distant viaduct. There are seats enabling you to take your time and enjoy this view, and the exterior of the house
This house has connections with Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson. I think they stayed here for a while prior to their marriage. Thee are newspaper reports of the time, and a replica of her very elegant wedding dress and his wedding suit
There was a costume exhibition on whilst we were there of Edwardian and Victorian costumes and their underpinnings, which we found fascinating. Being interested in sewing (this is Val, not Colin) I also enjoyed seeing the paper patterns for clothing
This is a really 'cosy' house, you can imagine guests loving being here, with running water to each end of the house where the guest suites are
The bathrooms have Art Deco glass tiles in blues and turquoise
There is a Skinner musical organ which goes through three floors
The grounds are huge, good for picnics or just to wander about
Well worth our interesting route getting there
