Beautiful intact nature. The trail from Haukanhieta is easy and consists of a 5,5km path to the "hole of hell" there the view is really nice. Nothing spectacular though and you will take the same path back. Easy to access and it was almost free of people in September. Possibility to camp close to the lake.

The route from Haukanhieta to Helvetinkolu and back was in good shape. There are stairs and pitkospuut where needed, and the nature is beautiful. I recommend for a nice trip.

Helvetinjarven (Hells Lake) doesn't live up to its name at all, it is stunning with some beautiful views as a reward. The circuit takes you through woodland, heathland, bog and to the top (and bottom) of a cliff. I visited with my 6 month old baby in a sling - you couldn't take a push chair round as the paths are studded with roots and there are parts that are very thin, there are also some steps.

The wild boar burger at the cafe by the car park is absolutely excellent too :D

There is very nice 4km path when you start from Kankimäki. It's well maintained and easy to walk, only if you wish to go down by the lake there is lots of stairs (it's not necessery to enjoy the views). It's fun to climb up the Helvetinkolu so I recommed climbing down the stairs.

We hiked about 4-5 kilometres trail with 7 and 9 year olds. It was a bit short hike for our family, but we wanted to try the only circle trail that is available in Helvetinjärvi. We started the hike from Kankimäki parking.

We went there in the begining of July and we had paths to ourselves. Only near the gorge there were also other people.

Helvetinjärvi was nice place, but nothing special.

Definitely worth visiting when in Central Finland or in near Tampere. Easy to walk through even with kids (we had 3 kids along, smallest walked all the way and they were 4 years old and one in backpack). Hint: take something to grill with you, there´s a nice barbecue area by the Hell´s lake. And prepare to get stunned By the nature and view! Visit after walk in Hell´s Gate, a restaurant that has wild boar hamburgers and all other yummies!

There are several national parks that can be visited in day-trips out of Tampere. The most famous is probably Helvetinjärvi N.P., because apart from the usual trees and lakes here can be found also a gorge.

To get information, maps and brochures we first drove to the visitor center of Seitseminen N.P., since there is none at Helvetinjärvi, several kilometers northeast from here.

Once at Helvetinjärvi N.P. we could leave the car in the Haukanhieta parking area, where there also are dry toilets and an information board. We started walking in northerly direction, past a campfire site and cooking shelter. Soon we had nice views towards lake Haukkajärvi, the biggest lake in the park.

After about 1 1/2h we were in Helvetinkolu and were all surprised how small this gorge really is. On the other hand we all very much enjoyed swimming in the dark soft moor water of the long and narrow Helvetinjärvi (which translates as 'Hell's Lake').

There are no circle trails in Helvetinjärvi, so we walked the same way back and enjoyed the serenity of the nature here. Even on a sunny summer day the park had only a few visitors.

Helvetinjärvi is about one hour drive from Tampere.
The scene is typical Finnish; lake and trees, hills, rocks and paths. Ideal place for hiking, canoeing or hiking shorter or longer paths. Or just making some coffee or having picnic. Pick berries and swamps.
If you forgot your picnic basket home; there is nice spot to sit down at Helvetinportti. Open during summer and in September weekends.
Taste wild boar or ostrich, try some wilderness.

In my opinion the Helvetinkolu Gorge is nothing special but you got to love the hike in a silent and rugged forest with cliffs, rocks, small bonds... So it's a nice place for a hike. The con in helvetinjärvi National park is that there are no circle trails, so you ahve to hike somewhere and then hike the same trail back, unlike in other National parks nearby.

So if you like a relatively easy hike in a peaceful forest, go ahead. Don't expect any spectacular gorge to take your breath away.

A great website to check our the trails and other info in this and other Natinal parks in Finland: http://www.outdoors.fi

We went there, hoping to find a real canyon but ..what a delusion! We passed by without recognizing it: it's just a 2 m large and steep walkable pathway that jumps down 20 m to the lake. Nothing to be shaked for, though the indication at the path start warns "Helvetinkolu, welcome to hell".
The trek, overall nice, can be done in 45-60 min without rush.
Sorry to possibly disappointing someone, but by reading the tripadvisor report we expected something more.
