It seems a nice castle and was due to open during July, but I was there and no one came to open the door that Sunday :( Because of Covid-19, you can only visit the grounds.

There are guided tours, and the guides are quite well informed about the life and times of the castle in previous centuries. This is not a large castle, but it can give you a good idea of what life was like inside a castle. Parking can be something of a challenge if you come during busy times because there are only a few (paid) spaces on the market square in front of the main tower and drawbridge. You can learn a 1000 years of history here because inside the castle walls is an old Georgian manor house that then served number of functions after the Damer family, who built it, left. There is a local history exhibit inside the house. The exhibit is worth a visit, it delivers a good overview of life in the area in the previous one hundred plus years with artifacts, furniture, tools, photos, letters, clothes, uniforms, and other possessions of the local man (Kelly) and his family who donated the materials.

We had visited Kilkenny Castle - more dramatic but we just walked through. We were offered passes to the castle from the White House Restaurant next door, then realized our Heritage Ireland passes covered it also. We appreciated having a guide who told us about two distinct periods of history - Roscrea Castle, which had a drawbridge and was surrounded by a moat, and the Georgian House (also on the tour) built for the Damer family. There was a free exhibit on the top floor of the Damer house with artifacts donated by a local farmer upon his death (Mr. Kelly) which shed light on his way of life. There was a beautiful garden out back (also free). My son didn't like the house tour, but I thought it was interesting to hear about the different furniture as it related to what would have been there at the time the house was used as a residence. I was happy with the tour given that I was in the area; I wouldn't make a special trip to visit this site given how many similar sites there are in different parts of the country.

Very welcoming visit.. shown around the house and castle by knowledgeable and kind staff. Answered all ours and the childrens questions. Just fantastic to see the level of renovation work that's been undertaken. Gardens are lovely... a trip to roscrea always brings back such wonderful memories of childhood.

This is a really nice castle that has been restored. It has everything a castle should have : dungeon, drawbridge, full wall etc. It is from the 1300’s and later had a house built inside the grounds which is very unusual. The tour guide was good.
