Beautiful walk to the waterfall, the river is absolutely gorgeous
Nov 2020
San Gerardo de Dota town and waterfall are beautiful places to visit. I highly recommend going to San Gerardo if you´re visiting Costa Rica. The walk to the waterfall is beautiful because you walk along the rive the whole way and the Savegre river is absolutely gorgeous.

Cool hike, but not for everyone
Jun 2020 • Couples
This is a good place to get some fresh air, disconnect from city and do some exercise.
There are some important warnings: the paths are poorly signalized, so it's REALLY easy to get lost. This is a rainy location, therefore it's highly recommended to do the tour early, because if the rain comes, everything gets ten times more challenging. The "road" (if you can call it that way) to the big waterfall is steep, narrow and slippery. There are some metallic stairs, but most of them are broken. There are two hanging bridges. When finally arriving to the big waterfall, there's a very small place to stand and appreciate the view. I wouldn't recommend it for more than two people at the same time.
My advice: try to look for a local or ideally a guide who would take you there through the safest path. Wear shorts, good hiking shoes, carry a coat and water. If you're into adventure, the experience totally worth it.

Very beautiful but very dangerous
Apr 2020 • Couples
We decided to walk to view them one day from Savegre Lodge , all I can say here is DONT , the final half mile ( took one and a half hours ) to get to the falls is extremely dangerous , bridges ( including suspension ) are broken with missing hand rails , holes where you are supposed to walk over grills above water , lack / missing ropes , a lot of the route is overgrown & very slippery , it is lethal & visitors should be warned against visiting ( especially is you are supervising children too ) the authorities need to close route & repair asap . Such a shame as the falls are lovely , the first mile of the route is along the river with masses of beautiful bird life .

Challenging hike to second falls
Feb 2020 • Couples
We did the hike all the way to the larger falls and quite enjoyed it! The way to the first falls is fairly easy, never sloping too much until after the first bridge over the river. If you’re up for a challenge, the path to the second waterfall gets a bit hairy with steps missing from metal structures and a bit where getting closer to the falls means using a rope to climb down steeply inclined rocks. We quite enjoyed it on a sunny day in late February, but I imagine it might be terrifying on impossible in the rainy season.

My husband and I are able bodied and in our early thirties, older travellers and those with children may want to stop at the first falls.

We went there on horse back ...crossing the stream a couple of times...what fun.. Many people hike there and the trail is pretty good but we were glad to take the horse option

Beautiful

Short walk. Great payoff. Plenty of places by river to rest and enjoy. Lots of birds. The trail to the 2nd waterfall is hazardous.

Outrageous Hike to the Falls
Jan 2020
What an outrageous hike we had. Not for the faint of heart! But worth every step. Totally out in the woods in nature

Not as easy for oldies!
Feb 2019 • Couples
Our tour operator had this down as an easy hike and our young agile guide agreed. A good level path they said. But it’s all relative. We’re both in our 70s and I have had two new knee replacements in the last 18 months. You’ll be fine they said! I was ... just, but only because I’d remembered to take a hike stick, Best Beloved was on hand to help me down the steepest ‘steps’, and we were with a group of birdwatchers who stopped frequently so we had time to catch up and recover a bit. Not only were there the dodgy bridges which others have mentioned there was also quite a bit of up and down scrambling over roots. We didn’t get to see the waterfall from the best angle as that bit meant crawling under rocks and that was too much. But, despite all that it is a beautiful ‘walk’ and we saw wonderful butterflies and birds along the way and I really pleased to have done it.

I felt quite triumphant at what I and my new knees managed to achieve as we live in a part of England near sea level where the hills are more undulations than hills.
