A lot of History

Picturesque and loads of lovely stories from this very well kept island, which you visit as part of a trip on Lough Erne.

Devinish Island was the home of my Meehan ancestors. They protected the Book Shrine of St Molaise (now in the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin) for hundreds of years. Very emotional visit on beautiful, peaceful day in May.

We took a boat ride out from Enniskillin to Devenish with our 3 year old, unsure what to expect. It was PERFECT for this age group! The boat ride was slow, gentle, and very safe. Once on the island, the ruins are the perfect sort for toddler adventure. Nothing was too dangerous, and we could always keep him in sight... More

Myself and three daughters came from Colorado,Las Vegas, Nevada and Southern Utah just to see Devenish Island, we found it to be beautiful. The tower, the cemetary and the ruins were all very interesting. My maiden name is Devenish therefore I was intrigued. We are so happy that it is being taken care of in such a splendid manner. may... Four and a half couples and a fifteen month old child visited Devenish Island by barge in February. It was pleasantly deserted (it can get very crowded in summer). The concrete paths provide an easy walk up the hill beside the ruins of the Culdee Church, St. Molaise's House and the Augustinian Priory with High Cross. The views all around... More

Wonderfully historic. Your mind can't help but drift off into the past whilst you picknic. However it does not take long to enjoy the ruins. I say enjoy , but on a a fine summers day it can be less than piece full as boat loads of tourists and children descend onto the island . However it is well worth... More

Our trip to Devenish Island was on board the MV Kestrel and it was a good way to get a glimpse of the Lough and visit this monastic site. The island is fenced off behind the ancient stone buildings and home to a healthy herd of cattle. If you have a day or two to spare, boat hire is also... More

This is a must see if you are in County Fermanagh. The boat ride to the island was beautiful. The tower is wonderful and the kids loved seeing the ruins. I have been there several times and never tire of the experience.
