Great for a day!!
Mar 2021
It is paradise! Great place to spend a day at the beach with the family! Lola's was good, but expensive.

Tourist police
Jan 2021
There are no tourist police here to look after the well being of tourists. When we tried to speak to someone in far away police beat, they laughed off our torrid time here!!

Amazing beach experience
Jan 2021 • Family
The most beautiful beach in Guanacaste. Loved the mix of locals and tourists, amazing waves and super chill atmosphere.

Great place to surf!
Dec 2020
Took surfing lessons here. It was busy but less busy than Tamarindo. Beautiful beach. Lola's is here. Excellent food, great service, not cheap - touristy prices. This is a good place to catch some waves 20 minutes from Tamarindo.

Worth the effort
Mar 2020
absolutely gorgeous beach; plan to pack up everything or make sure Lola's is open as there are no amenities here besides Lola.

Simply beautiful!
Mar 2020
Untouched beaches, huge waves, quaint spots to eat. It's worth the
20 minute drive from the Tamarindo area.

Quiet beach, great waves
Mar 2020
We took a long walk on this lovely beach, away from crowds and with great waves. We finished off the walk with cocktails and tacos as Lola's.

Great beach
Mar 2020 • Family
I have travelled around the world and have a very high standard of beaches. We came back to this beach after visiting 3 years ago as we loved it so much. The waves roll in and are great for surfing, bodyboarding or just playing in. The beach is huge and never feels real busy

Simply gorgeous!!
Nov 2019
We caught one of the most amazing sunsets here. Just an absolutely stunning beach, one not to be missed. We were here in the off-season, and it was pretty busy. I imagine it gets really crowded during peak times. Don't miss the monkeys in the trees on the way to the beach!

Do they allow Day passes?

All answers are great. One thing to add is that the car parking has people who monitor the cars for tips (something that happens a lot around Costa Rica) I would always tell them no problem but I would only tip when I got back. This way they actually are around and dont just leave whenever they want.

Anybody know anything about the nearby zip line in Playa Avellana?
How far is the Liberia airport to Avellanas? Any must stops for groceries on the way in?

Not sure about the Zip line. There is not much at Playa Avelenas. The airport is about 1 hour 45 mins away, and the roads are not all paved into the beach area. I would definitely stop for groceries on the way in, to stock up.

Where do recommend grocery shopping? How about fruit and bread each day?

Sorry if you already got your answer. If you’re passing by any of the major towns like Tamarindo or Santa Cruz, stock up there. Near Tamarindo at Villa Real is a great fruit stand. The two supermarkets near Villa Real north and south of the town are cheaper than the pricey Auto Mercado.

When you arrive on the beach, in front of Lola's restaurant, you have to go to the right for 500mt. You have to looking for it because is hidden from some trees. There begins the manglar path that ends in Cabinas Las Olas Hotel. It's a free passage.

Hi, Did you stay close to Playa Avellana and where did you rent a board?
HEISTWONDERLUST

I would recommend contacting Iguana Surf they are in Tamarindo. They can rent you a board and make arrangement to get you there, they can also provide you an instructor if you wish. I would suggest staying in Tamarindo, there is a lot to do and it has nice waves to get your feet wet again (if it has been a while for you) then head out to Avellanes as a day trip (as mentioned by another reviewer). ENJOY!

If you want go to Playa Avellanas from Tamarindo you can take the Avellanas Express Beach Shuttle in front of Neptuno Surf Shop, next Agua Disco, with 12$ roundtrip. You can check the schedule in Facebook Page 'Avellanas Express' . Pura vida
