Banteay Chhmar (the “Citadel of the Cat”) has been called the "second Angkor Wat” and was constructed by King Jayavarman VII, who also built Angkor Thom, Ta Prohm and Preah Khan. This remote and vast site is currently under restoration and visitors find a stunning interplay of temple and jungle.

It’s two hours north west of Siem Reap in a very rural province. No crowds. Very quiet. Very amazing bas relief sculptures on walls. Very authentic experience. Wear closed toe shoes because you’ll be climbing.

Similar in style to Angkor Wat, it is a little smaller but much less crowded. The main temple has a giant mural and some Bayon heads. There are satellite temples in the cardinal directions. They can be difficult to find (look on Google maps) but...More

This temple is in terrible shape, which I loved. Felt very Indiana Jones/Laura Croft while exploring. The Banteay Chhmar Community-Based Tourism (CBT) group is very helpful and we loved the simple homestay with the Sril Som family.
