This is the place, where the famous Phaistos disc has been unearthed. While Knossos is the more Hollywood-style, might-be "restauration" of Minoan culture, this sight is much closer to the truth. After a 90 minutes ride through rural Crete, we found an excellent sight, which superceeded our expectations. Definitely worth going here.

Went to this site for a university trip. The site is well managed with a fantastic gift shop but the best thing about this site is the cat pack that followed us around soliciting pets from all of us. Made the site that much cuter. The site itself on a good fine day gives excellent views across the Messara plains... More

Phaestos is about 62 km from Heraklion and has wonderful archaeological sites; the palace of Phaestos is from the same period as Knossos and disappear at the same time; there are no reconstructed columns as in Knossos; Phaestos is different; there are a breathe of holy solemnity and a real harmony with the countryside; The atmosphere seems that solemn celebrations... We actually preferred this ancient site to the experience we had at Knossos. The only slightly disappointing thing was that much of the lower area was closed off to the public. I do understand the reasons why, and might well return in future years to explore it further. As with many Cretan sites, all artefacts have been removed to the... More

Has food, shop and clean bathrooms. Site interesting with nice views. Do not depend on the busses for this trip. They are few and far between and sometimes see you but refuse to stop.

After the imaginative reconstruction of Knossos it was refreshing to see Phaistos and in some ways it gives a better impression of how grand the site once was. Sufficient information boards to read as you walk around and adequate facilities (cafe, shop & toilets).

On a week's archaeology tour this was my favourite site. The setting, on top of a hill, is dramatic and the ruins are extensive, but easy to understand. There are well preserved royal apartments, many storage areas and cult rooms. Both older and more recent ruins can also be seen, showing how people continued to build in the same place.... More

A must-visit in Crete, just south-west of Heraklion, near the southerrn resort coast. Large, well-maintained site. Many of the artifacts can be seen in Heraklion's museum. One can imagine the streets teeming with life and citizens moving among the stone structures. Nice high position overlooking the fields and sea to the west.

Everything is in the title... Besides the beautiful landscape there's really nothing to see except for a few half broken walls of stones. Even the comments were not that good. The visit is not cheap. If you want to learn something, go to the archeological museum of Heraklion
