My son and daughter and I had only one full day to see Tokyo so I found Travelience based on the terrific TA reviews. Our guide was Noriko who was a delight. She picked us up at the Park Hyatt and took us on the subway to Hamarikyu garden which was beautiful. There we had matcha tea which was terrific.... More

Our family of five (three boys aged 14, 10 and 9) have finally come around to the idea of using a travel guide in a big city when you are short of time and don't speak the language. Yuriko from Travelience was outstanding. After warm introductions and talking carefully through our two-day plan, she took us to the local train... More

We tried more than one guide in each city we visited and Keiko was astounding. Her English and knowledge of the subject matter was unbeatable. I wanted to go to the Tokyo National Museum and Seno-Ji Temple. Keiko had prepared in advance for the Museum tour and knew were we could find the specific Exhibits we were interested in. When... Our tour guide was Miki and she was a pleasure. As promised in the tour she met us at our hotel and walked us to the train station, giving us some highlights about Tokyo on the way. She helped us get our pasmo cards replenished for the trip. Please be aware that as it says on the website you need... More

Our guide was able to work the sights around what we had already seen, and used the JR Rail as much as possible since we had a pass for the train system. She asked what our interest was for lunch, and gave us an amazing "local" experience we would never have ventured to do on our own. As an added... More

My boyfriend and I were lucky enough to have been the only ones who booked this day because it was just us and Yuriko, our guide. We spent a lovely day discovering traditions in Asakusa, electronic city in Akihabara, fun sushi lunch in Shibuya, peaceful Meiji shrine and shopping in Harajuku. It was a great decision to book this tour... More

We couldn't speak more highly of our experience. Our guide Yakko really went out of her way to show us so many different aspects of Japanese culture and was extremely knowledgable about the many places we visited. We left with a deeper appreciation of Japanese culture and a love for Tokyo. We especially liked that Yakko listened to us and... More

Staying in Ueno, Asakusa

Neighbourhood Profile
Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.
