The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Ikebukuro
Ikebukuro is an area of massive development. Several thousand tenants occupy two giant department stores and shopping malls, where all sorts of shopping and gourmet foods can be enjoyed. The 60-story building at the east entrance of the station, Sunshine City, is a landmark within Ikebukuro and features an aquarium, planetarium, theme park as well as an observation platform. The popular name for the western side of this area is "Otome Road" (Maiden Road) and there are many shops selling products related to anime with a female theme. It has rapidly become the worldwide headquarters for ‘otaku’ or geek culture.

Nice departmental store
Dec 2019
This is another of a nice departmental store in the area located near the station, covering several storeys that offer all kinds of lifestyle products people need. It was quite crowded when we came by here, especially the basement supermarket. It was huge and had a wide variety of food, fresh fruits and veggies, meats, dairy products etc. There are also several food kiosks and stalls that sell local and nice food like cakes and pastries, bento sets etc that are so tempting and nice!

We did buy some food here before heading back to Shinjuku where our hotel was!

Supermarket in the Basement
Oct 2019
It’s been a year since it was refurbished. I was so glad to see more cooked dishes on the shelf like before. On the second day, we went at around 6:30pm. They were marking the fresh produce with reduced prices.

Disappointed
Jul 2019
After all the hype, we were disappointed with the offerings from the food court which did not look nearly so enticing as those at Mitsukoshi Ginza or Food Show or Isetan.

Refurbished Basement
Mar 2019 • Friends
We went down to the level B2, hoping to buy some food items from my favourite stores. But we noticed that the whole floor had been changed. They informed us that it was refurbished late last year. Many individual stores had been merged into the supermarket and some other stores had been closed down. Nevertheless, we managed to buy what we wanted.

The store with everything
Aug 2018
Right at Ikebukuro station in Tokyo, this department store contains (1) an excellent, if a bit expensive, selection of all sorts of food at the B1 and B2 levels; clothing and household goods of all sorts from the 1st floor up to the 10th or so; and good restaurants above that up to the 15th. The higher you go on the restaurants, the higher the price. The staff is very helpful, though not always conversant in English. The only inconveniene is finding the elevators, which only go up to the 8th floor -- after that, it's the escalators, to give customers a view of the goods on each floor.

Sakura (Cherry Blossoms) Festival
Mar 2018 • Friends
As the cherry blossoms were in full bloom, “Depa-chika (Basement of Department Store) had Sakura Festival. Each store prepared special sweets that were very colourful and delicious.

Huge place
Oct 2017 • Friends
First time to this department store in Ikebukuro. It definitely was large! Spent the whole day there walking around, buying souvenirs and eating. If you haven't been to this store yet, it is worth a visit. Easy to get there too. Just 4 stops from the Shinjuku Stratton to Ikebukuro. A short walk towards the west exit and there you are.

Confusing to find your way around
Aug 2017 • Family
This centre is HUGE! It has many entrances, lifts and escalators which makes it confusing to find your way around. These are from the railway/metro station and from the surrounding streets.

There are restaurants on the top floors - a wide range, many of which have 'plastic food' examples to show you what the food is which us really helpful. We eventually found a cafe which had spaces to sit down (as many are tiny) and had an English menu as a bonus!

The food markets are in the 2 basement levels - we only managed to find these once!

I'm sure with more time it would become easier to find your way around - it was an interesting experience!

Terrible experience!
Apr 2016 • Family
Came here just to look for Pandora. Found the counter but the salesperson can barely speak English. Managed to tell her we wanted a new bracelet and is looking for Disney collection. We bought a normal bracelet instead cause she didn't show us the Mickey bracelet (which we didn't know of).
