Ikebukuro is an area of massive development. Several thousand tenants occupy two giant department stores and shopping malls, where all sorts of shopping and gourmet foods can be enjoyed. The 60-story building at the east entrance of the station, Sunshine City, is a landmark within Ikebukuro and features an aquarium, planetarium, theme park as well as an observation platform. The popular name for the western side of this area is "Otome Road" (Maiden Road) and there are many shops selling products related to anime with a female theme. It has rapidly become the worldwide headquarters for ‘otaku’ or geek culture.

The largest department store in the area

Of the 3 department stores in the area, it is the biggest with north and south blocks. You can find at the top floor their Roof Top Garden Park. At the basement, again, food stalls and grocery items for take out. We went there after 5:30pm and looked for our desired food items to bring back to hotel for dinner. Discount can be 50%. Bakery items are not cheap.

Amazing selections of the take out food. They don’t allow pictures but it was colorful arrays of hundreds of various food. The only thing is that unfortunately, like many other department stores, there is no place to sit to eat.

On the wall of the underground passage to Seibu Department Store, we noticed a large advertisement of a roof top garden park on Level 9. It had a few food stalls and tables. There was also a garden shop. At the end of the park there was a little pond surrounded by various plants including kangaroo paw!

You can enjoy many Japanese cuisine!

Get off the JR line at Ikebukuro station and go straight from the south exit, and you can see the department store in front of you. There are so many Japanese cuisine sold on the first basement floor. There are sweet shops and bakeries, too. You can taste the real Japanese cuisine very suitable for your stay in Japan and for the souvenirs. It's very regrettable that the shop staff do not speak English well. I helped the customer, but the shop staff said nothing and just went away. Do they want to lose customers? This is one of the famous department stores in Tokyo! I love my contry, so I want many visitors enjoy their stay in Japan.
I recommend trying traditional Japanse sweets ( wagashi ) when you happned to visit here. "wa" means Japanese style, and "gashi"( "kashi" pronounced as one word ) is sweets.
There is a bookstore on the first floor, and if you feel tired after walking around, you can take some rest at the bookstore cafe, which is a Japanse style cafe.

As my favourite Japanese Green Tea shop was closed down in the basement of Tobu Department Store, we went across to Seibu Department store to find the same shop. It’s a large department store just like Tobu Department store.

This is a very convenient place to go to, if you stay in the Ikkebukuro area. Its a place that you simply cannot miss. As its now close to Xmas, all the Xmas trees and lighting are up, which makes it very beautiful to see especially in the night time. Inside, you can get such a huge variety of luxury goods, toys, stationery, food etc.

This store has -nearly- everything, Most of the brands, and very good Japanese products. Good shopping is guaranteed. B2 has fresh food court. 8th floor has lots of restaurants of all kinds.

The biggest department store in the world (apparently)

The 8F restaurant level is the highlite of this store. Visit the sushi shop with the long queue (midori sushi) which is exceptionally good quality for exceptionally low prices. The other restaurants are OK, but nothing special. The food section in the basement is pretty good, but avoid the brands on GF which are merely the same as brands the world over.
