We went to Tokyo for welcoming Year 2017. Without any plans, we decided to go to Zojoji Temple which is about 500 meters away from the stunning Tokyo Tower. Just like many other tourists, we were quite surprised by the large crowd of visitors to Zojoji Temple, a popular place for new year countdown. Food stalls and beverage are available... More

Quite an interesting temple surrounded by suburbia. We were staying in a nearby hotel and visited at 2 different times - night and then day - both times the place was crowded. The setting is also quite pretty, with nearby parks. There were plenty of food and other stalls set up all around. The temple itself is beautiful and well... More

The temple grounds are gorgeous. It is identifiably Japanese. If you are lucky, you will catch the worship service there (although no photos are allowed inside if this is happening). The museum next to the temple is great, and has nice gifts to purchase. There are trees planted by foreign dignitaries in the courtyard (a tree planted by General Grant... More

It's a bit far from Shinjuku (no less than 30 min), but the view is just amazing. You can say it's only one view, which is Zojoji and Tokyo tower behind, but it will totally make up for the long trip. It's not even a long trip if you're in Ginza, or maybe Roppongi. Also, the temple is nice on... More

The place is big an quiet! They have a small gift shop but no information in English. The sales associate was shy and did not wish to interact with tourists. Expensive to buy souvenirs there! Also no information about the surroundings as we notice a lot of small little statues with hats on and flowers but nobody could explain to... More

If you are in the area (to see Tokyo tower) then maybe you want to take a quick visit around the grounds and take the iconic photo with the tower as a backdrop. Although as far as shrines go this one is so integrated with the urban environment around it that it kind of loses the religious atmosphere. Also -... More

At least the times I have visited, this temple is relatively free of the tourist crowd. It is a beautiful spot with a great view of Tokyo Tower. The temple and the small statues around it make for an interesting visit.

Dating from around 1400 this Temple has magnificent gates that lead you into the temple. In a land of temples you need to pick an choose a bit but put this one on your list if you are in the Roppongi area

It was nice to go on new years eve little crowded obviously but we enjoyed it not quite the same as some of the more "official" new years temples

I visited this Temple on December 30th. Apparently the last day of the year and the first day of the new year brings thousands of people who come for many reason but mainly to pray. It's very beautiful and impressive. It smells great because they have a big caldron of incense burning right outside the temple.

Staying in Odaiba / Shiodome / Shinbashi

Neighbourhood Profile
Odaiba / Shiodome / Shinbashi
Odaiba is an entertainment hotspot with a giant ferris wheel, concert halls, amusement arcades and lots of shopping. It also boasts Oedo-onsen-monogatari, a hotspring that recreates old Edo-era ambiance and is very popular with foreign visitors. Shiodome has ultra-modern office buildings where you can often find restaurants with a great high-rise view of Tokyo. The neighboring area of Shinbashi is a district of much older commercial buildings and it's a great place to join 'salary men' enjoying a drink and snacks at street stalls under the railway bridges after work.
