Akihabara was meant to be a shopping drop to see if we could lay our hands on some electronics, however it turned out to be much more that that. The area is lined up with lots of electronics stores no doubt. There are also shops selling souvenirs, apparel and a massive collection of anime characters, dolls, collectibles etc which were... This place is crazy in many ways, including good! Anime, retro video games, snacks, plastic model / gundams, auto enthusiasts, painting, comics / manga... an entire building of just electronics with just about anything you can imagine!? Finding food was a little difficult as it didn't seem maid cafes would specialize in food necessarily...

We wondered around to look for Anime stuff but were a little too early and lots of places don't open until 11.00am. Got to a couple of shops and 'games' centres and then left. Wasn't enough for us to plan to go back. If what they have is high on your list then obviously the place to go but for... More

there many great places to visit to tokyo, but this is among the best ones. the sub culture of cosplays and anime are illustrated by the enthusiastic locals here. even if you don't like the sub cultures, you must be a bitter person not to love this place!

Being a big anime fan and gamer this was the place for me! The whole place is great in the day, but when the sun starts to go down and the place lights up the whole atmosphere starts to buzz with a new life! There are bucket loads of arcades, floors of prize machines and lots of electronics to play... More

The place is buzzing with people and noise it is so big you kind of need to wing it. We found few tax free electronic shop places but they were all crowded. Most shops we saw were for game lovers and so many game arcades

Akihabara was fun if you are into electronics in anyway. This is home to the gamer and anime sub-culture with people in cos-play. On the weekends the main street is closed and people wander everywhere. Easy to get to using the Yamanote (Circle) Line. Lots of relatively new second hand electronics and cameras for sale. People sell them due to... More

We wanted to see much more, actually this is a nice colorful area, but most of Tokyo is so there is not much to see but great colorful buildings, we went into several different stores, not the tech paradise I've heard about.

Staying in Ochanomizu / Akihabara / Kanda

Neighbourhood Profile
Ochanomizu / Akihabara / Kanda
Ochanomizu boasts its academic foundations starting with Yushima Seido, the birthplace of modern day Japanese education. The area has kept its college town feel with several university campuses. If you head towards Jinbocho, you'll find musical instrument and sports equipment shops, and an area of used bookstores for students and anyone interested in literature and the arts. Akihabara is well-known for its computer and electronic goods stores, and is now hugely popular as the must-visit mecca for people interested in anime and games. Kanda is an office district where you can find loads of reasonably priced izakayas popular with professionals who stop to eat and drink before making their way home.
