The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Ochanomizu / Akihabara / Kanda
Ochanomizu boasts its academic foundations starting with Yushima Seido, the birthplace of modern day Japanese education. The area has kept its college town feel with several university campuses. If you head towards Jinbocho, you'll find musical instrument and sports equipment shops, and an area of used bookstores for students and anyone interested in literature and the arts. Akihabara is well-known for its computer and electronic goods stores, and is now hugely popular as the must-visit mecca for people interested in anime and games. Kanda is an office district where you can find loads of reasonably priced izakayas popular with professionals who stop to eat and drink before making their way home.

An important cathedral in the design of Dr. Josiah Condor.
This time, I visited for coverage.
The appearance of standing in this very quiet area seems to cleanse your heart.
Even those who are not interested in architecture can feel the times when they come here.

Beautiful Holy Resurrenction Chathedral, just a minute from the station of Ochanomizu. Hidden away. Very beautiful and impressive architecture and the inside is very serene. The opening hours vary according to season and service, so check their homepage (available in English) beforehand. Small fee/donation to get inside. Ochanomizu area has a lot to offer, but not crowded at all. Highly recommended area! Chek "hiddenjapanguide" for more detail.

Found this lovey gem while strolling around the area. Beautiful Byzantine building that transports you out of the urban sprawl of Tokyo despite still being surrounded by the same. 300 yen entrance fee is worth it especially if you have never visited a cathedral of this variety before.

I'm Greek Orthodox but landed in Tokyo on my name day this year and wanted to visit this gorgeous Orthodox Church and pay some respects whilst in Tokyo.

I always try and find a Greek or Orthodox Church when I travel if possible but this one was one of the most interesting and unique ones I've seen. Worth a trip, the staff were also friendly and it allows you to see another side of Tokyo when getting to it too.

This historical Russian Orthodox cathedral is a most amazing place. Who knew the Orthodox church had more than a century of history in Japan? Even from the outside, everything appears so pre-revolutionary Russian that it's easy to forget one is in Japan (except there is Japanese writing on the Bible in the icon about the door). Inside, there seems to be nothing Japanese, except the nice ladies at the door, who request a donation of JPY300 from non-Orthodox visitors (but give you a pamphlet and a candle to light in exchange). The layout of the building and its furnishings (including the icons), the chandelier, the altar and crosses, the carpets, it's all very other-worldly. I'm so glad I visited!

If you have time, attend the service on Sunday 10am. The choir is amazing. These are voices that must be heard. Sensational. Beautiful architecture - exterior and interior. Friendly parishioners and lovely gentlemen at the entrance. Location near Tokyo uni. Subway and JR lines right next to the cathedral. Good eating spots and Maruzen around here. Actually a good place to hang out as it's not crowded this side of Tokyo. Starbucks and Tully's nearby. Street behind has great music stores (instruments)

It is always interesting to see an orthodox cathedral in the middle of Tokyo, this is a nice building near the metro and easy to reach. However you must pay to enter it which makes the difference with Shinto shrines that are always free. If you go to Kanda, you could pass by and have it a look, otherwise it is not worth the time.
