Just an industrial zone, a lake clearly divided for production, no colour, don't waste your time and keep driving

If you like beach walking then keep going past Lake Grassmere to the end of the road. This a wild and secluded beach well worth the effort to visit.

the salt ponds at Lake Grassmere are a very unique location. Sea salt is gathered, purified and shipped from the facility

It is less than 3 miles off the main highway. There isn't really a place to pull off and walk around. We don't think tourism is encouraged but it was fascinating to see a pink lake. The little information we found on line indicated that it is only part of the year that it looks pink.

Stopped by on our trip south to show grandaughter the salt piles and explain how salt is made. Could see enough from the road to make the stop worthwhile.

I had seen these Salt Lakes on Google Earth. When driving from South to North on the South Island the main highway passes right pass these lakes. You must stop and take some photos, they are incredible colours. Sadly we passed by on Good Friday, so it was not open, but we would have loved to see someone and have... More
