Set in the ancient heart of the city, opposite the monumental Basilica of Santa María, this imposing new building takes up an entire city block and encompasses the oldest civil construction in the city: the venerable Casa de La Asegurada, an outstanding example of Valencian baroque architecture built as a public wheat granary in 1685. Known as the MACA, the Alicante Museum of Contemporary Art is owned by the City Council and is one of Alicante's leading cultural venues. The construction and refurbishment project was designed by the architectural firm Sancho-Madridejos and funded by the Valencian Regional Government. It boasts a total floor space of 4680 m2 spread across four storeys and two basement levels, and features one temporary exhibition hall, four exhibition halls for the permanent collections, a library, teaching venues, an events hall, storerooms, workshops, plus quarters for security, administration and the like. The Museum's diaphanous spaces showcase its rich and varied collections of contemporary art according to highly rigorous museum programming in which conservation and education are given top priority.

I am not generally speaking a modern art fan, but did find a couple of pieces that I liked. Free entry so worth dropping in to widen ones experiences.

This free museum is not overwhelming at all and has different art medium on display. Its a nice escape for an hour or two from the 'old' Alicante. There did 'nt seem to be a gift shop or cafe, unheard of in England!

Mostly geometric art with some optical illusion stuff as well. Very nice to stroll around, if you have an hour (no more time needed than that) to spare.

This was a place that both my daughter and I had high on the list to visit while in Alicante and we were not disappointed. There were a variety of 20th century modern artist whose work was displayed. Artists we were familiar with that had works displayed were Miro, Calder, Picasso and Magritte. An artist named Sempere founded the museum... More

First of all, it was a pleasant surprise that the entrance was free of charge. When we were at the museum, the ground floor section was closed, but we could go upstairs to see the rest of the collection. We had no expectations, but it turned out to be worth while. The museum could improve the lighting management though. It... More

If the weather outside is not that nice, you can give it a try. I personally didn't like it: three floors of artworks, not really commented. You have to guess what that is and what it represents, because there's only the biography of the author and nothing more.

Firstly this gallery was a definite find! The exhibition in general was excellent especially the exhibit on the ground floor in memory of 9/11. Also the creative room downstairs where children are encouraged to build whatever they want with wooden bricks. The modern art collections on the upper floors were very interesting, well laid out etc. Our children also enjoyed... More

Apart from the paintings , take time to enjoy the works of Eusebio Sempere who is in many ways responsible for this wonderful museum's very existence. I believe the Alacant train station bears his name. Thanks to Tina at the front desk who provided me with a free booklet 'Ruta Sempere' which shows other memorable works found in Alicante City... The interior of the museum is very much suited for the modern art inside. 3 floors with contemporary paintings, sculptures and video. Free entrance as are all the museums in Alicante. Good for an hour or more if you are into modern art.
