- TJMac_10Belfast, United Kingdom510 contributionsStunning locationThis is one of the most beautiful locations in Northern Spain and well worth a visit. Apparently it is a GOT location. We went via a guide who drove us from a pickup point in Bilbao, but I'm sure it would be possible by bus. The walk down to the bridge is rough stones which I imagine would be slippery in wet weather. There are 241 steps once you get over the bridge, but if you are reasonably fit it shouldn't be a problem. You can stop as often as you like. Once you get to the top where the church is there are no facilities so bring snacks or a packed lunch as it is a lovely place to stay for a while. The church itself wasn't open but by placing your mobile flat against the window it is possible to get a photo of the inside. There is also a shelter built at the top where you can sit out of the sun or rain. On the way back it is uphill but again you can stop and rest if you need to. It would not be suitable for prams, wheelchairs or anyone with walking disabilities because of the rough stone path and all the steps. There are bathroom facilities at the car park and there is a bar/ restaurant at the start which was closed when we were there so maybe worth checking out times before you go. There was an ice-cream vendor there which maybe served coffee as well...I'm not sure.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 October 2023
- JoJLondon, United Kingdom1,228 contributionsStunning viewsStunning scenery. It was closed for renovations so you cannot walk to the site but the views from the path are incredible. Wear walking boots or trainers with good grip as it is slippy. Not for the unfit as it’s steep. Highly recommend going in cooler months.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 February 2024
- Roxanne CSurrey, United Kingdom503 contributionsAmazing walk! One of the highlights of our trip! Fascinating history, scan the QR codes to learn more, and apparently home to Dragons more recently. This walk isn't for the faint hearted - I tracked our walk and it's 2 miles from the free car park, and 778ft of elevation (down, up and back again). The first part of the walk is mainly slopes and long steps, then up to the church are smaller steeper steps - see photos. Do: take water, wear sensible shoes, wait if the small free car park is full as it turns over fairly quickly and have an icecream when you get back to the top near the car park - you've earnt it!! Don't: rush! Enjoy the views, and take your time. We're both runners so quite fit, so but even we were a bit puffy by the time we got back to the top.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 May 2024
- John S Glover14 contributionsA World Class experience.FANTASTIC world class location. The young and fit could do the whole journey, but we stopped at the excellent observation point a couple of hundred metres from the top. Don’t just stay in the cafe bar. You have to go down a bit for the full view.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 May 2024
- njoythejourneyHilton Head, South Carolina116 contributionsGaztelugatxe-A Must Do!We drove here and did not park at the first lot up above to the left, because there is another larger parking lot below. You can reach the lower lot by heading down further, past a wooden building on your right, and then up to the left to park. Walk down to the entrance trail to the right; it has a wooden gate that says Gaztelugatxe. Continue on the trail until you reach the bottom of Gaztelugatxe; it not a short walk. You will see the ocean first and then finally the glorious view of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. We got up very early in San Sebastian to get there by 9:00, and I got glorious photos because no one was walking up yet, totally worth it! Once you reach the stone steps, you start your climb to the top. I would avoid doing this at all costs if it raining hard as the stone would be slippery coming down and photos could be lousy. The vistas left and right support your climb to the top where there is a chapel. This is a must! Our family members were older and in their 70's but fit and they easily made the climb. It is a must do!Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 21 June 2024
- Roslie H15 contributionsHistoric & BeautifulHighly recommend visiting and taking in this very unique destination of historic proportions. The climb and the views are breathtaking. Just wish we could have rung the bell at the top but conquering the 231-237 stairs to the top was worth the climb.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 9 July 2024
- Julia W11 contributionsDefinitely “go to” if you want to contemplate, pass if you are bored being close to natureThe place is really beautiful and worth visiting. I was in July and yes, unfortunately is really crowded but I still had a chance to have some stops to contemplate. If you would like to have more peaceful experience, choose longer route through park and choose going outside of vacation season. And remember that going there is free of charge but you need to reserve tickets at least week earlier. And please, respect nature and do not go if you do not like walking at all. Walking calmly up with taking some stops, I still managed to be on the island in about 30 minutes. It looks scary but it isn’t! But there are many steps and sometimes slippery, take good shoes and do not take small kids. And to tourist - please respect others and do not shout at the top, if you are not interested in looking at the view, hear sea waves or pray/meditate - just don’t go there, you will annoy others and feel bored. And yes, if you want calmness maybe it will be better to be there early in the morning or on the last slot.Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 4 August 2024
- BdgtTravel305Miami, Florida998 contributionsSpectacular Journey to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe - Take TwoWeather permitting, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is an absolute must-visit for anyone traveling to the Basque Country. This enchanting islet, connected to the mainland by a winding stone bridge and a steep staircase of 241 steps, offers a unique blend of natural beauty, history, and a touch of magic. On our first visit, a thick fog did not allow to appreciate the views so we did not hike to the islet. This time, the weather was clear so we were able to make the challenging journey. But every step is worth it. As you ascend, you’re treated to breathtaking views of the rugged coastline and the azure waters The path is well-maintained, but be prepared for a bit of a workout. Once you reach the summit, the small chapel dedicated to St. John the Baptist awaits, along with the tradition of ringing the bell three times and making a wish. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is a magical destination that combines stunning natural scenery, rich history, and a bit of pop culture. And, the return trip to the top is hard but it is an experience you won't forget. Loved it!Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 9 August 2024
- Urumi89Milan, Italy16 contributionsFairy-tale experience experience!Spectacular view! San Juan is a one-of-a-kind fairytale experience. We went for landscape photography and it was our trip's highlight with a dark cloudy sunset with a burning pink cloud where the sun was setting (very Game of ''Throne-ny")! Note on the path: there is a stair path that is quite steep so be careful if you have joint pain because it's going to be a short way down and a long way up. Wear comfortable shows! Go with the longer, but more gentle, path if you prefer a longer stroll (also steep at some points). Note on the booking: during high season and holidays you need to make a reservation well in advance but you can visit without a ticket before 9.30 am and after 7 pm.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 August 2024

I would like to point out that to visit this place now you need to reserve tickets online. We thought that without tickets you could get a nice view at least and the tickets were only for walking on the path but you do not really have any amazing views. The best place for view we could find was a viewing point in a restaurant and I put the photos here for you to judge. However it is easy to get there by bus from Bilbao. The bus to Bakio leaves from Moyuna plaza each 30 minutes and then there is another bus that takes you directly to Gaztelugache.

I'm sure it's beautiful as they say in all the reviews, but if you don't have a reservation they won't let you get close to the beginning of the climb.
It's all full of vegetation, so from the viewpoint you can only see the end.
A great disappointment after getting to park, which is almost an impossible mission.
The information at the entrance is very bad, because now reading opinions here, I see that there is some option to get in waiting in line or if you go very early in the morning or late in the afternoon (they directly told me that it is impossible to go up without a reservation )
In all the places where a ticket is required to visit, there is usually a minimum for purchase at the on-site box office, NOT EVERYTHING BOOKS ONLINE. Currently the reservation is for a minimum of 15 days.

Poor management of entrances to the islet. You arrive on the spot discovering that to access you have to book a free ticket on the site (incidentally throughout the month of August, everything, is fully booked). On the official site of the Attraction however, it is written that after 19 and before 9.30 access is not regulated. But go and explain it to the rude ticket inspector, who, in broken English, gave summary explanations and kicked us out like plaguers. Well done. In any case, at 100 meters there is a panoramic point from which to see the island (I add without exhausting 3 km of climbs to get to the top). Of course, we found out this too because the very kind lady reserved this information only for the Spaniards. Vote zero.

It was closed for repairs when we visited last year so we were happy to find out it had opened. No tickets required in January. We stopped off on our way to San Sebastian having flown into Bilbao.
The first car park was full with a queue of cars waiting but carrying on past leads to a bigger car park nearer the start of the hike.
It's a fair hike down and then a fair hike up, but the weather was perfect walking weather, sunny and cold. We had worked up a sweat by the time we reached the hermitage at the top of the islet even though following a train of people. The top was pretty packed with people, so lots of photos and a quick rest before heading back down.
At the bottom, instead of taking the same route we took from the car park, we took the seemingly far less popular path to the left which makes a less steep (but longer) loop back to the car park. Again, plenty of photo opps on this walk.
We had good pintxos and a beer at the bar next to the car park. The bar staff kept track of who had arrived when and served in the correct order, despite the fact we didn't speak Spanish or Basque.
Definitely worth a half-day from Bilbao.

It is said that the stone staircase up to the chapel on the island of Gaztelugatxe is one of the grandest in the whole world with its 241 steps. There is no reason to disagree and it is not surprising that the island plays a big role in the seventh installment of the HBO series Game of Thrones.
The rocky island of Gaztelugatxe is located on the eroded coast 35 km east of Bilbao and is a major tourist destination. At the top of the island, 80 meters up, is a chapel that dates from the 11th century, perhaps even the 9th century. According to the legend, after climbing to the top of the rock, you should ring the bell three times and make a wish. Next to the chapel is a small shelter that provides protection from the wind. The island has had strategic importance and was raided several times, including by Francis Drake in 1593. And in a fire in 1978, the chapel was destroyed, but was rebuilt and reopened in 1980.
You can get here with your own car or perhaps with a bus trip arranged by one of several tourist companies. Although you have to be careful and take your time if you want to climb the rock. The 241 steps are only a small part of the adventure. First you have to get from the parking lot down to the bridge out to the island, just a tiring hike of just over a km. And you have to go back up again... There should be more benches along the way and a few tables down by the water, it all gives a slightly poor impression. Toilets are only available at the top of the car park, there is also a tourist restaurant here.
NOTE. Apparently only 1,500 people are allowed in per day, so it is necessary to buy a ticket in advance online.

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is about an hours drive from Bilbao or Donostia-San Sebastian. It is a vigorous walk to and from the actual site. Admission is free, though crowd control may at times be necessary at peak tourist seasons. The site was made famous as “Dragonstone” in King of Thrones—home to the House Targaryen.
From the base of the steps to the top is 242 steps—30-40 minutes depending on physical condition and rest periods. The views and photo opportunities are boundless.
Many reviews here are linked to the fishing village of Bermeo. I’m recommending a stop at the tourist center in the nearby town of Bakio: the best stocked tourist center we encountered in Northern Spain Basque Country: English, Spanish, French, German, and Basque printed guides to diving, trail guides and instructional guides to Txakoli wines (white, rose, and red).
There is a tasting station for wine and a short well done panoramic instructional video. All facilitated by pleasant helpful and knowledgeable personnel.

An amazing small island with a church at its highest point, Gaztelugatxe became popular after it appeared as Daenerys Targaryen’s fortress in Game of Thrones. The island offers fantastic viewpoints and is only a half-hour drive from Bilbao. There are two parking options: a small free lot, and a larger one near the entrance owned by a restaurant, which costs €3 per day. Entrance to the Gaztelugatxe route is free but requires an online reservation. It's usually fully booked weeks in advance, so reserve as soon as possible. If you miss the reservation, you can still visit the route after the last scheduled entry, as there are no controls at the entrance then. There are two paths to reach the island: Ermua is longer, while Urizarreta is steeper. Be cautious, as the path is steep and requires good footwear. There are also many stairs to reach the church, so prepare yourself physically. The route is almost 3 km long and takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes to complete. Make sure to bring water, especially in summer. If you don’t want to wait for the last scheduled entry, there’s an awesome hidden viewpoint a few minutes' walk from the entrance. Follow the road to the left of the main entrance past the restaurant; after 150 meters, you’ll find a small unmarked path on the right leading to the coast. The viewpoint has no fence, so be careful, but the scenery is fantastic.

We went to Gaztelugatxe and at the door they told us that we could not enter since only local people entered that day. Next to us was a family who had come from Tarragona and who, like us, had paid for the trip, gasoline, parking and bus to get there. There was no way they would let us in and the excuse was “there was an error on the reservation page.” Without a doubt, we have filed a complaint. We have felt cheated. Simply, SHAMEFUL. If you come be careful, they scam you like they do us.

We could not visit anything, because you have to book a timeslot online and the next free slot was 10 days later. There is no information, so you struggle to get parking, stand in line, the website does not load and then it is just full. Don't go there without online Reservation! They should write that everywhere, but they don't... Sucks big time.

Posto bellissimo.

Hi. It’s a difficult question to be honest. I certainly would not take your dog in the Summer months.
I think that you can walk to the steps of the church via a harder route or an easier route. Might be worth walking the easier route with your dog.
Have a look at all the photos posted and images to gauge whether your dog could climb the steps on its own or whether you would need to carry it. I hope this helps.

Bajar y subir por la antigua carretera. El recorrido es mas largo pero tiene mucha menos pendiente. Si quiere llegar hasta la ermita tendrá que subir los 241 escalones. Sobre todo tomárselo con calma y sin prisa.
