I got there after they closed so I didn't get inside the visitor center. However, I did see the nearby Fossilien und Heimatmuseum which claims to have more fossile on display than the Fossil Pit site itself.

We were looking forward to visiting Grube Messel as we heard quite a bit about it and were aware that it was a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Unfortunately, the visitor centre was disappointing given the amount of fossils retrieved from the quarry. Most people likely...More

Having read about Grube Messel for many years and the importance of its exquisite fossils, I really looked forward to visiting when we happened to be in the area. The fancy building boded well but two rooms in, I actually doubled back to check with...More

It's about a five-minute drive north of Darmstadt. The F/U bus (bushalte #22) can pick you up and transport you there from the train station (3.2 Euro a person). Cost 13 Euro for the two entry tickets (one for museum, one for the pit). On...More

If you go there, you should definetly go by car, because public transportation is not very well connected to this place. I recommend also to join a guided tour. If you are interested in fossils it is good place to visit.

It's a UNESCO World Heritage site, and could definitely impress. However, it's the worst presented UNESCO site I've ever visited. First of all, the signposting to get there is atrocious. Our car's GPS brought us close but then didn't find the exact location. The signs...More

We went there with the kids, but the actual place was closed and it did not make the impression as if there is actually much to see. Clearly a very important spot for science, and also the museum with some of the finds was interesting,...More
