Unique monument

An amazing view from kilometers, with his unmistakable skyline, only to be stunned when right in front of it. Very pleasant 1.6 km walk from the car park. You need to book for the visit at the hour from 10 to 5 PM.the interior is unique even if empty.

Visit to Castel del Monte - Frederick II castle
Jul 2021 • Family
Wonderful place, one of the thousands among others in Italy.

ADVICE TO VISITORS: entrance only through a reservation on IO PRENOTO; you must arrive 15’ before the booked time-table.... on the contrary there’s a waiting list

Frederick set sail to learn, not fight
May 2020
Intrigued by the mystery of a perfectly geometric, eight-sided castle, completely out-of-place in the Gothic age, a long time ago I hitch-hiked along a forlorn dusty road till I saw the first of the eight towers that form the perfect octagon. Why an octagon? Frederick II, free to roam the streets of Palermo as a child, came to adore everything Arabic. The Pope, though, demanded he undertake a Crusade to take back Jerusalem from the Arabs. Instead of fighting them, Frederick traveled through Arabia to continue learning from them. When he saw the eight-sided Dome of the Rock, he knew then how to gall his old adversary, Innocent III -- reconstruct in Italy a replica of Islam's holiest shrine.
The only sign of life I saw: A bird's nest built in the capital of a column supporting an Arabic arched window.

Week organization!
Sep 2020
We travelled 2h to see Castel del Monte. On site we learned that you can only book tickets in advance. Not mentioned in both travel guides we had. Also only, almost exclusive info in Italian. Very poorly organized!

Nice small castle
Jul 2020 • Family
A nice and unusual small castle, with a particular architecture.

The visit inside is not free. There are no furnitures nor decorations inside, so if you do not have a guide it is not worth paying the entrance.

Pretty cool

I had wanted to visit this spot for some time and finally had an opportunity. I was the first to arrive and had the place to myself for the first half hour, allowing me to take the photos I had wanted. Definitely worth the detour.

History unfolds here!
Jul 2019
Very interesting castle to visit including a very interesting history right up the second world war! Unfortunately a lot of people stripped the castle of its valuables. Great view from the top into the countryside.

This castle is super special. We went in for free on sunday. Super nice! Too bad that you are not able to get on the top of the castle, anyway worth a visit!

Underwhelming expensive and inconvenient

Given all the lovely historic buildings, churches, forts etc in Italy I wouldn’t bother with this one. 5 euro for our carpark a good 10 minute walk away, 10 Euro per adult admission, and a series of bare rooms to see. Better to look at photos on the internet and save the time effort and money. Not sure how much the carpark is right next to the Castle.

There seems to be little info to relay about this site, so you walk through the empty castle in 15 minutes, and that’s all there is. The $10 euro tickets, and 5 euro parking, and 1 euro bus ride seemed like overkill. It is a really old castle up on a hill, and I guess that makes it worth it. I guess....
