This is an interesting stop to see the red volcanic rock quarry where the top knots were made for the moai. Some of them are still there. It's a short stop. While interesting, it... read more

The quarry of Puna Pau maybe is not as spectacular as Rano Raraku one, but it’s still a very important site to visit to have a complete idea on the Moai construction. This is indeed the Pukau quarry and there you can see many of these red topknot in different stage of engraving, some ready and some still into the... More

Spectacular Moai! What an amazing experience to see the Moai in person after learning about them in school 40 years ago.

Puna Pau was the last stop in our group's two day tour of Easter Island. This site sort of served as a summary of the whole picture we drew from our explorations. It contained beautiful hillside views, dormant volcanoes, plus town and island vistas .that were just breathtaking!

We came here on our private tour and we spotted small domes made of stone. Our guide explained to us that these are ancient chicken coups and since the currency back then were chickens, it was similar to our modern day ATMs. We thought it was a funny comparison!

You must visit the Puna Pau to get a complete understanding of the entire Moai statute including its Pukao (hat/knot on head). You will see various pukao lying around in various stages as well as some incredible views. But more importantly you will see how these structures came to be and learn about the red coloring. Once visiting this location... More

The red top-knots were made here. They represented the hair piled on top of the head. The distance from here to the various Moai is impressive, but much easier to move than the Moai themselves.

It is very easy to reach, just a short distance when you go visit Akiwi and it is interesting to see the size of the hats used in the Moai.

Quite a hill to climb up. I was about out of breath getting up there. The views are fantastic. Here you can see the top portion of the "hats" some Moai have and how far it was to get them there. Was there November 2011.
