About
We are Sealcentre Pieterburen, one of the oldest and best seal rehabilitation centres in the world. On our campus and field station live and work volunteers and researchers from all over the world. By our collective passion and multidisciplinary approach we form a learning community. We transfer our passion to the public and make them aware of our mission. For years we have a passion and take care for the seal, including its environment. A clean and healthy Wadden Sea is very dear to us. This unique piece of nature has the title 'World heritage' and we should treat it accordingly; for now, for later and for our children. This puts a great responsibility on as human beings and as a social enterprise. The role of the seal is crucial; it is the indicator of a clean sea. We measure, monitor, rehabilitate and share our knowledge. To keep both the seal and its habitat healthy and to offer our knowledge and expertise internationally.

Interesting educational visit
Aug 2019
We went to the seal sanctuary by bus and train from Groningen. Well worth a visit. I would recommend the behind the scenes tour to gain more understanding of the animals. The viewing windows get very crowded so behind the scenes you get a better view. The cafe was also busy but the coffee was fine! The exhibitions were informative and the whole experience very satisfying. The work of the sanctuary seems genuine and we spent about three hours there.

Cute seals, educational staff

Cute seals, great place that clearly cares about rehabilitation, and isn't some commercial enterprise.

Nice place to spend a couple of hours

We liked the fact that because it's a sanctuary, it's not commercialised. The focus is all on recovery and preservation of the animals. Yes, there is a gift shop but it's only small and even here the focus is on recycling and environment.
The information provided is interesting, and we appreciated the little exhibition about the disaster with container ship Zoe. The way the information is presented is diverse (e.g. boards, videos, samples, microscopes) which makes it attractive to kids but it's not too childish for adults.
The sanctuary is a bit out of the way but well signposted and easy to find. We left feeling like we'd learnt something and that our money would be used in a useful way.

Setting them free!
Apr 2018 • Friends
What a great day! Releasing seals from Zeehondencentrum Pieterburen. First see them at this sanctuary, all being very anxious what was going on. Then joining them on board to release them.
The kids present were chosen to set them free, they will never ever forget.
A fantastic day! Please look at the website of the Zeehondencentrum for release dates.

A great place to see how real rescue work happens!
Jul 2018 • Family
The centre is not commercialised like a zoo or animal park, and clearly prioritises the welfare of the seals, which was great to see.
We were offered a behind the scenes tour, which allowed us to see new seal pups who had just been brought in. All our questions were answered by friendly staff.
It's a small place, but there was lots of adorable seals to see and we spent a long time watching them. It was also nice to know that our entry tickets contributed to the great cause. Highly recommend for adults and children!

It's ok

They need the support to keep up the good work they are doing but for me it was not worth the €31 I spent for the family.
Great to see the seals and hear about their work but as the main focus is on sick animals being rescued the overall tone is somewhat depressing.
Again, love the work they are doing but the visit was not all that for us.

For a really family friendly afternoon its great to see the seals recovering and being cared for so professionally and with great passion. Next door is a great place to stay in a converted church!
