Gorgeous gorgeous church!
Apr 2018 • Couples
We visited the day after Easter. When we went inside all the lights were out except for the only over the alter. If a church can be the breath taking in the dark It has to be awesome when lit!

Amazing inside. Make sure you put your mone6 in the slot for the lights. Was amazed the first time we went in, it’s so old and dusty and atmospheric, well worth a short visit.

interesting but needs more light

interesting but needs more light, with coins one can illuminate some of the paintings and you really need light to study the paintings

Stunning

Walking by one day and we found it open while under some reconstruction. It was very dark but we still wandered around the space and then I found the light box, put a euro in and voila, what a beautiful church. Well worth the visit.

Stunning Art and Architecture

I am ashamed to say that this masterpiece of a building has been available to view on the many occasions I have been in Panicale, and I did not go until now. What a stunning spectacle of a church with art that will make your jaw drop.

Don't judge a book by its cover...

Imagine having this amazingly beautiful place within steps of your own front door! We visit often, a place of peace and tranquility, and yes, often solace, for prayer or quiet reflection, for ourselves and others. On your first visit, do feed the coin operated lighting in order to better view its interior and works of art even though the sound of the coins dropping into place is a bit off-putting. After your coin's brief measure of lighting has been exhausted, do remain in the near darkness and solitude, close your eyes and allow your soul to be cleansed and flower anew...in whatever form you choose. We are an Episcopalian and a Lutheran, by birth and now by choice, but we do attend mass here on occasion even though we understand only a bit of Italian and absolutely no Latin, but the "story" is the same, whatever the language, so we are able to follow along. Although we are drawn to what some would consider a rather plain exterior and facade (we actually prefer the back of the Church as viewed from the angle of Bar Gallo in the Piazza Garibaldi, do not be misled to the point of failing to step inside to the beauty within. And the tolling of the bells in close proximity? Another thing we love about living in this lovely Umbrian hilltop village!
