I cannot say enough about Tony Kirby! In fact I recommend going to the Burren just so you can experience his tour. He is incredibly knowledgeable- covers the history, geology, flora, fauna, and inhabitants. We were also fascinated by his discussion of current environmental challenges faced by Ireland. And to top it off he interspersed his remarks w the recitation of 5 poems, beautifully and movingly done. It was unforgettable. There were nine of us and we raved about the tour for days afterward! Do not miss Tony Kirby!

We’re a family of 11 from all across the globe holidaying in Clare. We took a guided tour with Tony Kirby and the rest was quite literally history, poetry, and lots of humour. It was amazing how passionate he was about the surrounding area and his knowledge of The Burren was superb. He seamlessly merged history, geology, and poetry in a way that had us all captivated. Tony truly brought the Burren and it’s history to life. Would highly recommend anyone to take this tour with Tony Kirby!

For our first visit to the Burren, I arranged for a guided walk with Tony of the Slieve Carran (Eagle's Rock) brown route. Tony's deep knowledge and witty commentary truly completed the experience for my wife and I, connecting us deeply with the historic and pre-historic context of the place, as well as the folklore, spiritual history and rituals. We had a great time on the walk and feel so fortunate Tony was able to join us as our guide.

As an inbound tourism activity professional - I can only say if you're visiting the Burren - this should be a 'Must do" on your visit. We've been with tony twice - each a spell binding tour.
The other reviews will give you more detail but if you want to understand the rich environment you travel through then Tony is the man best placed to explain it - even in simple language for us Dubs! :-)
A true professional who is passionate about what he does- and does it so well!!

This was my third tour with Tony. I had a friend with me who had never been to the Burren and while the places we saw were a repeat, I will remember a few more facts as Tony is so thorough. Make sure you get to St. Cronan's Temple. Tour buses cannot go there so there are no hordes which makes it very nice. And if he doesn't offer it ask him for some poetry. He has recited Yeats and Heaney and Longley but this time he introduced us to Sean Dunne.
Tony is so knowledgeable about archeology, the environment, flora and fauna of the Burren.

Tony is as fabulous a guide as the reviews say! He’s companionable with a good sense of humor, as well as an extensive knowledge of history, geology, archaeology, botany, and poetry. It was a joy to have him lead us. The hike wasn’t strenuous, but the ground was uneven. Despite the day being warm at lower altitudes, it was cool and breezy on our walk at Slieve Carran. It was everything I had hoped for; on the earlier half of our travels, I kept wishing for someone to guide me and help me understand the landscapes I was seeing, and Tony did just that! He also made recommendations for our time in Dublin, where he used to lead tours, and for books that would enrich our understanding of the Burren. Like others, we finished our hike with lunch at the Burren Perfumery, which is a delightful oasis in the middle of the region!

We drove down from Galway to go walking with Tony for a few hours and thoroughly enjoyed our time with him in that strange and unique moonscape of a landscape that is the Burren. I'm a gardener so appreciated all the info about the local flora, but Tony's commentary ranged widely from geology to history to agriculture to ecology to local writers and poets. He even recited a few poems for us - my favorite was "Everything is going to be alright," by Derek Mahon. We also had good conversations about a variety of things that are not on Tony's standard agenda but which were interesting to us. Definitely recommend, because while you can go for walks by yourself (and we did, afterward, to a spot Tony recommended) - it adds a lot of depth and texture to go out with someone who knows the area. You really do need good shoes tho - and depending on time of year, a good windbreaker and possibly gloves and a hat because it can get a little chilly there - and remember: no toilet facilities anywhere nearby, so don't have tea or coffee before you go! Also we went to the Burren Perfumery after this walk for lunch, but before our next walk. It was the perfect day!

We read about Tony's hike in the Burren in one of Rick Steves' tour books and were very happy with this tour. Tony is a wealth of knowledge and so interesting to listen to. It was 3 hours long, and we felt we could have hiked more with him. He recited a couple of poems, discussed the flora, the geology of the terrain, and we bombarded him with questions. We were rained on, sleeted on and nearly blown away, but it didn't dampen our spirits. After our hike l, we mentioned we were going to lunch in Doolin, and he said to try a hot whiskey to warm us up. Now we aren't whiskey lovers, but he assured us stating that he isn't either but that we wouldn't be disappointed, and we weren't. Beautiful scenery and a great guide.
