It's a far drive to come here, but the scenery is stunning. There were no facilities at the base of the dune, and we really felt a bit at a loss - there wasn't even a sign saying : CLIMB THE DUNE HERE... very confusing (there are signs along the road indicating Taleb Moreeb, but when you get there : nothing.) We just followed a bunch of Pakistani workers who were installing fences to stop stupid dune-bashers from destroying the fragile eco-system with there big 4x4.
It takes a bit of a healthy condition to climb the dune, but it's worth it!

The big red dunes. Firstly if you’re new to the UAE, you’re from Europe , uk etc, then the biggest shock you get is driving up to it from Liwa on the amazing 4 lane auto route, solar powered lighting, smooth tarmac. This is typical emirates, whereas you might expect a smaller road winding through the desert, not so. Furthermore, you can take a saloon car 2 wheel drive up there no problem. Don’t drive off the verges though, you’ll bury the wheels!
The Moreeb dunes is a playground for sand skiers dune bashers, and other adventure antics, as well camel racing and in December there’s a big international festival up there, hence the gigantic car parks.
Now don’t let me put you off, it is beautiful, and worth the drive up there. Out of season, it’s lovely and quiet, but as you approach summer ( after March), it will get very hot! Hot, as in you won’t be able to walk on the sand. Try scrambling up a dune, hard work!!
So I recommend, see the big desert as a tourist, and comprehend the vast expanse that is the “empty quarter “, as beyond here is thousands of miles of the same disappearing into Oman and Saudi.

The trip is 3 hours from Abu Dhabi. Made easy by the 160km per hour speed limit and then 140 kph. You pass through thafra nice small city. Then it gets pumpy and roller-coaster like. The puplic facilities are overused and it seems they are in need for maintenance since long time. As a first timer the availability of all what you need in a mobile fashion is surprising. It's a journey for one day and looks glamorous and attractive at night. However it gets noisy and unappealing if you decide to spend the night. Coz the engine never stop grinding till the break of dawn. A good plan is to wake up latein the afternoon and there. Eat drink walk talk and watch then head back or out there to a hotel or home for a quiet night and comfy sleep unless you have some other plans. And pick your friends the road can get long and boring.

Visited Moreeb dune during the weekend for Liwa Festival 2020. The road from Liwa to Moreeb dune is zigzag and it was really interesting. Many activities and a lot of people camping. The sight of the modified and tuned cars roaring and climbing the steep dunes, was really thrilling. It was a memorable experience and well worth it.

Lots of gorgeously shaped sand dunes on the drive out to Moreeb Dune. I was impressed on its height and steepness. I didn't bother trying to climb it as I had walked up lesser ones and they weren't easy. I'd love to watch an event there though as it must be pretty wild tackling the dune in a buggy.

Moreeb dune, part of Liwa desert is a must see.
We actually visit every weekend the camp of our friends.
And from a resident point of view, I believe it is important for new visitors to keep some things in mind.
As moreeb is getting more new visitors, more and more dangers occur.
Moreeb officially was opened and started for the local people to play with their cars, buggies and bikes.
So there will always be this kind of action.Dont think you find peace and quietness there.
If you are looking for that, you will need to drive into one of the sabkhas for quietness..
New visitors walk always up the dune and then stop on top and sit in a little bowl. This is very dangerous! We, in our buggies and cars, cannot always see you!!!
Please always stay on high points where you are visible for everyone!
Also camping, many people have started camping along the road in the dark!!!
This is extremely dangerous, as the side of the road is being used by buggies and bikes with special tyres.
Even more, during the festival in december, we are NOT allowed to use the road, and must use the sand all times.
You are not visible!!!!!!
Always camp and stay somewhere where you are clearly visible from at least 50 metres away, to all directions.
Also, we have noticed that many tourists are afraid of the emirati people. Emirates are actually very kind people, and if they invite you for a coffee or tea, dont be afraid!
All our friends are local, and have the kindest hearts!

Its about a 30 minute drive from the Liwa Hotel to Moreeb Dune, but remember to take your time as the scenic road incorporates timeless views of dunes, big and small, red and orange, and maybe the odd group of camels if your lucky. When entering the perimeter circuit of Moreeb, its mostly fenced off but on the north-west point you have a large parking area and are allowed to enter and climb the dunes that lead you temporarily into the next life where nothing else matters. It's a gruelling trek on the red surface as the incline is harshly vertical without any resting points, but at the top is breathless and treasuring the moment needs to be grasped and truly appreciated before leaving. When coming down the dune it's easy but too easy can result in too much speed, so be careful or the dune assault course beckons! Also be prepared to be covered in sand - head to toe, which is a formality considering how much power the dunes hold over us mere humans.
We drove form Abu Dhabi and made a day of it by visiting several forts scattered around Liwa, but Moreeb is the dish of the day, just scintillating scenery that cannot never get tired of watching...

What a unique experience to climb one of the tallest sand dunes in the world’s largest uninterrupted deserts! It is so beautiful, I think it should be a national treasure but sadly it is not. There are lots of cars and buggies roaring all over the dunes and leftover rubbish everywhere. If you go really far into the desert (I am talking miles away) then perhaps it is more untouched and cleaner. I really think it should be preserved better. I do not mind paying a fee to enter as long as the money is going toward preservation of the place. Other than that, it is a must see. It resembles Mars somewhat.

Hi I'm wondering if there is any organized camping / glamping that one can book at Moreeb Dune - or do you need to bring your own tent and camping equipment? I'd be grateful for any guidance.

During the LWIA festival, I have seen several tents near moreeb dune. Not sure, how long they will operate..
When I google I goth this link "enatni.ae/en/content/liwa-oasis-camping"
I have not used their service and I can not vouch for the experience.
You can also check with Liwa hotel and Talal Liwa hotel for such options

Hi, We are coming from Dubai for a roadtrip. What is the best time to start and be there and also what should be our google map destination. I read about Moreed Dunes, is that the only famous place as part of Liwa oasis or there is something else that we can consider.
Thanks in advance.

Well, I don't know anything. But, I a interested in culture much more than in cars, or shopping. I would love to camp out, and have a morning coffee with local people, and take a look at the way that the local culture is, and talk with people (who speak English). It is easy to get transportation to the oasis from the city?

Moreeb Dune is probably not the best way to experience the UAE culture, unless you consider the driving fast up against high dunes part of that culture as well. It is quite a fun sight though!
There are plenty of companies in the UAE that organize trips into the desert, but I find most too touristy where you go with a large group into the desert. The entertainment at the camp is loud and most definitely not a representation of UAE culture (eg belly dancers are not common here at all!). For me the best way to experience the UAE desert is finding a beautiful peaceful spot to see the sun go down across the dunes, sit around a camp fire, bbq and share stories.
I can personally recommend The Desert Diva for great trips! She also organizes trips during which you can drive offroad yourself: a truly amazing experience. Do a google search and you can find her. She is normally able to customize a trip to your preferences I understood. Her trips are less touristy and more genuine in my opinion.
