Nice church in the old town
Aug 2020 • Family
Iglesia de Santa Maria is the main church in the old town of Ainsa, a very beautiful town in Aragonese Pyrenees, in the North of Spain. You can see the bell tower from the Main Square (the most beautiful in the town for me). In faccmt, the church is small and beautiful and you can see it and the Romanesque bell tower, when you wallk around the old town. Nice.

An interesting old church in a lovely village.
Sep 2019
The Church of Santa Maria, also known as the Collegiate Church or the Church of the Assumption, is an attractive church in the Aragon Romanesque style with a splendid bell tower. It was originally constructed in the 11th century, and has an attractive 13th century cloister as well as a crypt under the presbytery from the same period. As with almost all old churches, further extensions were made in the 16th and 17th centuries, and it is clear that some major remedial work has been done in modern times.

The interior of the church is relatively plain and rather gloomy, which is perhaps the cue to insert a Euro in the box to turn on the lights as well as the background mood music (Gregorian Chants). A further Euro will gain you access to the tower, and although I’m sure that the climb is worth it for the views, my old knees disbarred me from having that pleasure.

Ainsa is a lovely and rather atmospheric building, and this church is one of its main features. Well worth a visit - and even a couple of Euros!

Amazing!

It costs a Euro to climb the tower and well worth it, the views are phenomenal from the top and coming back down is pure entertainment.
