It was during a Hong Kong Michelin Tour Meet-up that we visited this castle in an early morning. Since we stayed in Hotel Boston Plaza, it's just a few train stops from here. This is an important castle in the Japanese history. The Samurai stationed...More

The castle is a Japanese Edo period castle. Only 12 left in Japan and this is also listed as a national treasure. You can understand the smart design and engineering building this castle. It's not so crowded as well.

Hikone Castle is a beautiful place which is a Japanese Edo-period castle in the city of Hikone and the most significant historical building in Shiga. This is one of the original castles in Japan.

We wanted to see an original Jaoanese castle. Many have burnt down or been turned into museums and we saw Hikone is original. All the reviews sort of dismissed it as it is small, so we didn't expect much. Although only three levels high it...More

As the castle is built on top of a hill, visitors need to be prepared to walk and climb the stairs that lead to the castle itself. However, you will be rewarded with the beautiful scenery surrounding the area. The castle park is also beautiful...More

We were visiting the castle off-season and were rewarded with quite a bit off snow, which turned the area into wonderful snowy landscape. There is not much to see inside and stairs in the castle are quite steep, but the outside aesthetics are just amazing,...More

We drove for nearly 3 hours to reach the castle and was not disappointed. One of the few remaining castles with its original keep in Japan and still very well maintained. We think Hikone is special because it really is much smaller (but not less...More

I did not research enough to know that this castle was on top of a mountain and that it involves a bit of climbing. I was surprised to see the castle to be very small with very steep stairs inside. But being one of the...More

One of the best castles in Japan. Original structure...many have been rebuilt after being destroyed in the war. Warning, the steps are very steep and dangerous, and when you get to the top, you get a view that is only marginally better than the view...More
