This is a very attractive Castle standing in extensive grounds with a moat outside. Lots of Sakura blossom when we visited! There was quite a long queue to look inside then some steep steps up and down so consider whether you really want to do this. The views weren't really spectacular once you got up there but it was quite... More

We stayed overnight in Hikone so we could explore it properly without being rushed to catch the train back to Kyoto. On hindsight, we could have done it as a day trip, but still it was worth being in Hikone for a couple of nights and really getting into the soul of this little town. The castle is very accessible.... More

Compared to other Japanese castles I have visited, Hikone Castle is most disappointed. There are far from enough illustrations. The Tenshu only has 3 floors? The kind of glass on the top floor makes it impossible to take pictures of scenery. The space inside the Tenshu is mostly used to facilitate the traffic of visitors. The worst about the Tenshu... We stopped by this castle on the way from Chubu international airport to Fukui. It is a very small old castle from Aedo.

Over 700 reviews in English give you a good idea what to expect. Most people point out that there is a lot of climbing to do, and that it lacks modern comfort like airconditioning. My quick reading did not show me the reason for this : Japan has hundreds of castles all scattered throughout the country. Most of them where... More

For those who love historical site, castles and gardens, this attraction is perfect. Not many tourists during our visit, and our family had a really great time in the snowy Genkyuen garden. Lots of walking and hiking , wearing comfortable shoes is recommended. Also, you have to remove your shoes before entering the building.

This Castle is in a large Garden, there are great views of Lake Biwa to be had from the top. Nice place to spend a couple of hours, take a map because I got lost several times and some of the roads are very uneven.

What a beautiful castle and beautiful grounds! The grounds were just amazing! So peaceful and quiet, and not too crowded. There is a lot of walking here, including many uneven steps both up and down. It is a little tough, but it's worth it when you get to the top. The castle tour was lovely (Watch out for the steep... More

This is a great castle and grounds. It is a very pleasant but steepish stroll up to the castle and if that taxes you I would not recommend trying to enter and climb to the top of the castle. You remove your shoes and the internal stairs have narrow steps for western feet which are extremely steep especially for the... More

We went there literally because of Hikonyan. It was a quiet, beautiful, local place. Great view of Lake Biwa from the top of the castle. Great place to relax. On the way uphill, we stopped at a tea house, where we were served local japanese confectionery together with freshly brewed green tea in a traditional style. There were two other... More
