Yufuin: A must visit city in Kyushu👍👍
Great street food, cafe and cake shops!
Highly recommended to take rickshaw!! Not only it’s the best way to travel around the town, but also get best local knowledge and professional photography service.

We love everything there! Lucky we went there on a snow day. Everything was more beautiful with snow. It was a small town with lovely vibes. We definitely would go back!

Yufuin town is meant to be experienced by staying a night or two. Plenty of shops where I bought my fave barbecue dipping sauce, my furikake that makes my rice meals tastier, my unique wooden purse, my beautiful scented candle holder and a lot more things fancy. Food stalls are also everywhere including a famous croquette store and most importantly, the Monde Selection Winner cake shop called Milch where I had the yummiest double fromage cheesecake( better than Otaru’ s Le Tao and Furano’s Delice Honten). The amosphere of Yufuin is enough to make you busy during the day, but quiet and serene after 6 pm to allow your body and mind to relax.

Let's relax and slow life. It is good but not too excellent in Japan. Anyways, I like this place. There is not too much people on weekend because i come during low season. Hoep you will enjoy here like me.

This place is famous for its shopping street filled with European themed shops. The floral village is nice and has a Swiss feel. You can easily spend 2-3hours here if you like shopping.

Drove here and from Beppu and the road is windy but safe. It’s windy and cooler up in the hill here.
Parked outside the lake and paid full day fee of 500 Yen. Noticed that there’s some toilets inside that charges a fee, I used the one 150m from the carpark.
This is something like Kanazawa or Otaru shopping street with local arts & crafts as well as famous cartoons like Hello Kitty & Snoopy.
There’s plenty of street food to choose from and it’s reasonably priced. Tried the black sasame mochi, fried chicken and croquet and they are delicious.
Bought 2 square Japanese pillow made of charcoal from Manyo-Beppu homeware and it’s beautifully made.
Depending on whether you are stopping for coffee and cakes, if you just want to window shopping, allocate 2.5 hours to walk and take photographs.
I love to look at home furnishings and there is on the Main Street that sells high quality wood ware.
Don’t forget to try the hand bath outside a shop for free.
Stop by the lake and experience the clean mountain air and crystal clear lake.
Overall experience has been enjoyable, not extensive as those shopping street in Otaru but good enough for a fun day out.

The minute I stepped into Yufuin, I fall in love with the Mountain View and the small shop along the way to the lake. Very tasty snack and a lot of souvenirs. The lake view was superb as it was early fall and the leaves were changing colors.Love the place. Most recommended to all tourists.

A great little walking trip for a few hours or a day if you want it to be. I spent around 3 hours here though. Absolutely charming little town. If you're a foodie do yourself a favour try EVERYTHING. All the little shops you can find try everything. Everything is delicious. I capped the walk off with a visit to the near by lake Kinrin before turning back and heading back to the car at sunset. Great photo ops throughout, and if you're a female you can rent a kimono to wear during your time there.
Even with the 3 hours spent I think I could've explored a little more.

Turns out there is a 900 yen 1-Day Bus Pass, which can be purchased fr the tourist office at Beppu Station. Used that to do our Hell-hopping in the morning, before we did a transfer at the Kannawa Central Bus Stop to board the Yufuin bus (Brown line) all the way to Yufuin station. Alas, you’ll hv to top up 500 yen one-way for the bus to bring you all the way to Yufuin Station (the 1-Day Bus Pass only takes you as far as some theme park). But we found this the most efficient way to get to Yufuin fr Beppu, while enjoying some spectacular mountain views along the way.

If you are going onsen in Yufuin you would have visited the area. But if you are not planning for onsen in the area and have JR Pass and in Hakata (Fukuoka), then this is an opportunity to visit the town. It's a nice area to spend your half day there.
It's about 2.5 hours from Hakata and the trip is covered by JR Pass.

Hi! I am thinking to visit this little town for a day trip from Fukuoka. What I need to know is, whether it's possible to do onsen in Yufuin without staying at one of the ryokan? I need to go back Fukuoka in the evening by train ^^;

A bit late but I recommend to go to Yufuin. Yufuin has its own charm that can not be compared with other cities.

Can I leave a 30"inches luggage at a coin operated locker at JR station in Yufuin? Will it fit in the locker? Can anyone deposit luggage overnight there? I will arrive at Yufuin around 9am. I am afraid lockers may be full if overnight deposit of luggage is allowed.

local Japanese in Yufuin are friendly, suggest you to ask even if there is no locker available or suite your big luggage. Alternatively, there is an intercity bus stop just a couple of minutes walk in front of the JR station, you may ask if they can help you to keep your luggage.
We will arrive Yufuin on 5 April ~4pm on Yufuin no Mori from Hakata and returning to Hakata on the morning of 8 April.
During these 3 days, we also plan to visit Beppu as well as to venture down south to take the scenic train ride on the Hisatusu Line from Yatsushiro to Hayato station and returning to Yufuin. Please advise if this is possible or you have better suggestions. Thank you!
I would like to do a few hours of trekking in Yufuin, do I need a guide? Can I do it on my own without getting lost.

No, you don't need a guide. It's a beautiful small town.
You may want to trek up Mt Yufu which we didn't get to.

今回は「ななつ星」での途中下車でしたから1時間強の滞在で回答できませんが、5年前の10月下旬に「亀の井別荘」に宿泊したときの記憶では、18時頃にはほとんどお店は閉まったいた」と思います。
