Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.

It was a great half day experience there. We were given a tray of animals food to feed them including for kind ones like reindeers and fierce ones like bears and lions. Other than the safari tour, there are separate areas for patting puppies etc with a small charge. Definitely recommend it for family with kids though the bus to there took nearly 45 min.

We had a fun day at African Safari. During our Japan trip , we went there due to our friend ‘s recommendation and we were happy that we did. We use our car to drive around the animal safari. The safari park is well built with full security measure. All the animal sections are double gated with Rangers are onsite each section. I feel very safe and comfortable to look around in our own car. They have many animals in the natural way - not in the cage. They have restaurant facility. Also there is area where kids can do the pony rides ( with fee). Overall we are happy and having fun at the African Safari. Highly recommended for family with kids or adults who wants to feel the Africa Safari tour experience in Japan.

The wildlife reserve is super lovely in the middle of nowhere. I think the only thing about this place that was a little "suspect" was that you got to feed all the animals with tongs. It was not observing animals in their habitats but more of a zoo like experience.

That said, it was so delightful and fun. I think the animals are treated well and have open space to roam. They're trained to expect the treats when the vehicles roll by and approach the vehicle so you can get a very close look at them, which is nice if that's what you're into.

Don't expect much and you won't be disappointed. It is definitely a fun thing to do with kids over 8 years old or so. I also saw older folks and couples and we all had a great time. If you want a real safari you won't find it in Japan, but if you want to settle for a great substitute then this is it.

The animals looked distressed. If the highlight of the trip is to feed wild animals, then consider this (something which I wished I did)

How is it possible to constantly attract animals to walk up to the bus to feed if they are properly fed?

We were given small chunks of meat for the lions, 10cm by 10cm by 10cm cubes. And pellets for herbivores.

Aside from the buses constantly streaming into the protected areas at intervals to feed these animals, I wonder how their lives and diet patterns have been altered to fit into the parks programme to milk visitors of their money.

The restaurants within are also the worst value for lunch. It is not cheap to visit, and without the jungle bus tour which cost additional to visitors, there is little in way to justify the entrance fee.

Please avoid.

Unless one intends to go to Africa, this alternative safari is definitely a good option to experience a safari - getting so close to wild & dangerous animals.

You can buy a package from Beppu station information center, which covers bus rides both ways & entry fees. The bus is located at Beppu station itself. Yes, one can buy entry fees from the safari itself but not sure if it is more expensive.

The whole tour takes about an hour in a heavily-steel caged animals-themed bus & is very interesting. Don't worry, it's very safe so long as one follows safety procedures e.g. use tongs rather than your hands to feed the animals. There are so many Rangers in jeeps spread all over the huge place.

After the tour, go visit the free patting section, where one can pat colorful cute guinea pigs. And walk around the kangaroo enclosure as well. And stroll around the nice surroundings to see the adorable ponies too.

This safari is a very enjoyable experience for both adults & kids. After all, where else can one SAFELY see lions, bears, bisons, etc- so close within 6 inches from these wild animals? Except in safaris of course.

Highly recommended if one has not been to a "real" safari before.

Really a must do esp if you are travelling with kids. You have a choice of taking the jungle bus which is literally a moving cage to keep humans safe (highly recommended) or self drive (which we did after the jungle bus). Jungle bus passengers are given a tray of different foods to feed the animals - lions, deer, elephants, camels and more. While feeding raw meat to the lions, eagles came swooping down to grab the meat!
We’ve been on real African safaris but this was a memorable experience.

Ride 50 mins from the west exit of Beppu station.
The jungle bus is the most interesting as you sit inside after been given a tray of food for feeding the animals. You will pass through different sanctuary and feed the animals as they come close to you.
There is a petting zone where you can go to the dogs salon and cuddle the dogs for 20 mins at 200 yen for children. We at the balm restaurant which is near the petting zone. You can ride a pony, carry guinea pig, and fed the squarriel monkeys.
We bought a pass at 3700 yen that covers two way trip from Beppu, entrance to park and the jungle bus ride. Worth to visit especially with young children.
