We started with a tour of the Kuncho Sake Brewery (parked the car there for free), did a bit of tasting and shopping before walking the rest of the street. They sell sake ice cream at the attached cafe and it was quite nice though you cannot really taste the sake. It was quite relaxing walking the shopping street. There... More

We love all old town like street of shopping places all over. This old town about 400 meters from north to south, about 200 from east to west, and there are many old houses along the streets. It was constructed in 1616. Many food stall as well.

In ancient times, the place had long been ruled directly by the central government instead of the local one, for the rich produce and fine artifacts here. People here are still very proud of the golden period in the past. This area consists lots of popular stores from the ancient times, including a beer factory, a pharmacy, a shoemaker, a... More

Starting Kaoru long wine Tibetan Museum, the road to the Edo period, along shops have their own characteristics, and a coffee shop over fifty years, and even the Prince of Japan have visited! From the outside to smell the fragrant smell of coffee, sadly we dont have time to enjoy the nice coffee( a very old style interior )!... More

We visited this busy old shopping area but it felt very touristy. The only good thing we bought was Miso paste from a small home factory in a side street. A quick look was all I thought was warranted. It didn't feel the real Japanese thing like so many other places on the island of Kyushu.

Interesting grid of streets, stuffed with shops old and new. Takes about 2-3 hours just to browse all of them. Quaint streets. Reminded me of Matsumoto's old streets but nicer and more shops.

Mameda-machi, historically the old part of Hita, was an important trading center during the Edo period. Local museums and old houses regularly open their doors to the public and display their collections incl. Hina dolls, Onta pottery, wooden geta sandals and other handicraft products. Three main streets running parallel to each other create enough space for various workshops, shrines bakeries... More
