養老律令(718年)の施行細則たる延喜式の官社に指定された全国の神社一覧は、巻九・十の「神名帳」としてまとめられた(927年)。

「甘南備神社(薪村)」は、京都綴喜郡における延喜式神名帳にある14座13社の内の一社。
並河誠所(なびか・せいしょ)が論社・比定し、1735年頃に『五畿内志』を編纂・刊行する。
後に椿井政隆(椿井・まさたか)が手を加え、『興福寺官務牒疏』も著したともされている。

現在甘南備山周辺は公園として整備されている。甘南備寺は移転し、神南備神社のみが展望台の近くに残っている。行き止まりで歩いてでしか行けない。
京都・大阪・奈良に囲まれ、林の向こうに街と高速道路が望むことができる。
