Very nice resort with great snow. Views are stunning in particular at the top with the snow monsters. Good for short stay or ski beginners. Slopes are (too) short and easy. Lots of flat areas where you need to push on the skis or walk...More

We took the earliest bullet train on the Yamagata Shinkansen at around 6:00 from Tokyo and reached Yamagata at around 9:00. Then we transferred to Zao Onsen by bus (approximately 40 minutes, ¥1000/one way) and finally arrived just before 10:00. I suggest that skiers go...More

Obviously better than anywhere I’ve been in Europe (resorts in Andorra, Austria and Italy so far) but also deep and powdery enough to put Hakuba to shame! There are plenty of easy and intermediate runs but experts may have to go off-piste for their thrills...More

Had a great time riding here - the scenery is spectacular. We scored a heap of fresh snow and had an excellent time on piste and in the trees. Only complaint is the flats - no fun for a snowboarder. Had to unstrap & walk...More

This resort is actually three interlinked resorts using one ticket. There is something for everyone here with the snow being awesome whilst we were there. The only downside and it is significant is the large flat area in the middle of the two largest areas....More

OK: Sure, we had fine weather and blue skies for 5 days in a row after a huge dump just before we arrived. Yes it snowed overnight on our second last day. Sure the sulphur river smells a little but the onsens are soooo good....More

I write this regarding the main biggest Zao ski office called "Jupeer", the upperleftmost when referred from Zao ski resort map (because there were some others ski/cable lift and station/office/resorts there.) It was the nearest ski office station from Zao bus terminal (that you can...More

Zao Onsen is well worth a ski/ snowboard trip. The advantages include the usual Japanese light powder and consistently deep snow everywhere. The village is traditional. The onsens are renowned for being possibly the best in Japan and the sulphur steam rises up all around...More

I bought a return bus ticket with the cable car ride to see the Snow Monsters at Yamagata station. I saved about ¥500 Yen buying this ticket. This is a great place to enjoy skiing and viewing the snow Monsters at the same time. I...More

Hi Mary, sorry for my late reply. Probably too late. If you go in May, snow season is over. You won't see the Monsters. Temperatures are now around 15C there. Best season for ski there is February.
