Beautiful Setting for temples and statues
May 2019 • Couples
After visiting the Tanzan Jinja shrine and pagoda,
we still had some time to spare, before returning
to Nara. The Abe Monjuin temple is a few minutes
by bus from Sakurai station. This is a beautiful
complex of temples, statues and stone lantern
lined paths. In addition to the 7th Century Abe Monjuin
temple, which is named in honour of Moniju, the
Buddha of wisdom, there is an attractive little temple
set in the centre of a small lake. The larger temple
houses the Tokai Moniju a 13th Century statue of
the Buddha seated on a lion. An entry fee of 1200 yen
is charged, but photographs are forbidden, so we gave
it a miss. There are various statues of Buddhas and monks
in the attractive grounds.

Convenient to the station, this is well worth a visit.
