Firstly, it's easy to get to Miyajima. Just take the JR Sanyo Line from Hiroshima Station to Miyajima-guchi Station (less than 30 minutes). Then take a ferry from Miyajima-guchi Pier and Miyajima (only 10 minutes). Once you're on the island follow the crowd to the...More

We caught the electric tram from Hiroshima then a JR Ferry to the island. The ferry pulls up directly behind the floating Tori gate which entices you to visit it. Make sure you look up high tide and low tide times to get the best...More

Must be done. The island is simply fantastic and the Itsukushima shrine is unique. It is best to take the ferry before 8am, then you can take nice photos of the shrine without many people. The hike to Mt. Miesen is beautiful and the view...More

If you do Hiroshima, follow with a happy place. This island is miraculous and magical. You are surrounded by natural beauty but cuddled at the same time by cultural wonders. The shrines will knock you out. Run away from the cheesy village, put on comfy...More

Whoever's advertising this place is not doing a good enough job. The island is much more lively and developed than I'd imagined. The staff at our hostel recommended staying overnight, when many of the tourists have left. The floating torii and itsukushima shrine are, of...More

What a great island this is. Must take a short and cheap ferry ride. If you like oysters, this is the place to go. It’s also experiencing many things Japan has to offer on a one day trip. Beautiful temples, great markets and restaurants, and...More

Just a short walk down from the JR Ferry landing on the sand beach there is a "mom and pop" small tourist boat. It is worth the modest charge to sail close to the O-Torii and get great photos.

Nice to spend a day at this island. Take some pictures of the gate at high and low tide. See all the temples on the island. There are also enough places to have something to eat.

We visited on July 6 and the trains and train delays had the greatest impact on our trip there. Miyajima itself and the ferries had limited impact.

Hi Kevin, I would suggest less than half day would be sufficient, please check weather forecast as if it’s raining then other than lunch you may not able to spend time on Miyajima Island
