Pretty castle up the hill- you can drive most of the way if you have a car (and public transport is quite hard to use to reach this area so you'll probably be in a car). We were pleased to be handed a leaflet in English only to see that the English part only extended to the front page! Good... More

From a distance this castle looks very big but, once you have walked the path up the hill to the castle, it is quite small. But the view from the top is awesome and well worth the walk.

Wonderful! The walk to the castle through the trees is beautiful. Once at the top you can see almost all of Gujo- Hachiman. The creaky floor boards really make you think about what it might have been like years ago. Must see.

Because the road is not built for coaches to travel on, we have to literally walk up to the castle, located about 300+ metres above sea-level. However once there, you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the old town of Gujo Hachimanjo.

The castle is one of the oldest wooden reconstructed castles in Japan and offers fantastic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys as well as the town. You can reach the castle after a brisk 15 minute hike up the mountain or via car on a narrow winding road. Gujo Hachiman Castle is truly spectacular in autumn when the maple... More

Overlooking the town from above was an exceptional experience. Everything was like what we usually saw about past Japan in movies or animations. The old streets and buildings were well preserved. On the foot of the mountain was a temple with graveyard. And the castle just sat on the top of the hill. It was around 15-minute walk from the... More

From the city center, it took us about 20-minutes to hike up the mountain-side to see this feudal castle. 310-yen for adults, 150-yen for kids. There is a small museum. But the view from the castle is beautiful! Worth the hike.

My father took me to Gujo-hachiman when I was young since his hobby was Ayu fishing. I revisited this city in 2014 to show my daughter, and the water was still clear as I remembered. You can view the city and the river from this castle. I also saw a red dragonfly at Yoshida river and huge butterfly on the... More

A bit off of the beaten path but worth the trip. A beautiful castle, majestic views and a museum that let's you take pictures. Visited in early Spring. I parked at a shrine at the bottom and hiked up to castle. There is a small parking lot next to the castle if you'd rather drive up. Take the road to... More
