Do not go here for a relaxing stay

Lovely house on the inside exactly as shown on the pictures but once you arrive and step out of your car - utter hell!!!! What Nicole fails to mention is that the apartment is actually located inbetween marble factories and there is constant drilling which causes absolutely unbearable noise. Instead of ‘a bit of background noise’ as described under the property listing on airbnb, it is more like a chainsaw being held to your head 24/7. Nicole also writes that there is a ‘strict schedule’, however the workers told us they work when they want and how long they want each day and she confirmed this. When we returned to the apartment at 8pm, after trying to find alternative accommodation (proving impossible at such late notice, ) the workers were still at it with their drills. Being very British, we tried to come to an amicable compromise between us and Nicole, however she told us she didn’t care if we reported it to airbnb as she was selling the property anyway due to the noise! Nicole also suggested that we spend all day away from the house or stay inside the house where you can’t hear the noise. If we wanted to stay inside for a week we would’ve stayed in rainy old England - i think she didn’t understand that part of the attraction of Italy is the ability to relax outside in the sun with a glass of wine at 7pm, preferably in moderate peace. Furthermore, we had already payed a cleaning fee upfront and we suggested we would stay for one night and then leave. However, Nicole said this was absolutely not possible as she would have to change all the sheets again (a service we had already payed for) which forced my family of 5 to sleep in a car in the 30 degree heat after driving for 8 hours! Lovely! The alternate option was to pay £500 for one night in a hotel. Naively, we didn’t take note of the fact there were no reviews on the page of the apartment and the resolution centre told us we were the second guests to ever have booked Shakti Studio. This contradicts what Nicole told us - namely that she had had many visitors from airbnb who were not bothered by the noise! Lesson learnt: don’t go to a place with no reviews or thorough previous communication with the host. On the upside, airbnb resolution centre was absolutely brilliant and we were promised a full refund as well as a £60 voucher to be used throughout the year at airbnb. Of course a whole 2 days of our holiday have been impacted as well as having to sleep in a car with no opportunity to shower, but because of how amenable and understanding airbnb were, this experience will not deter us from booking with them again. Now we need to sort out where we are sleeping tonight as we are still homeless
Interesting Stone Carving Studio
Oct 2014
I sculpted a marble piece at this studio the weeks of Oct. 20 and 27, 2014, along with 4 other people with whom I usually carve in California every summer. The location in Pietrasanta is great, and the studio has work stations for 12 people. The setting is beautiful, among some umbrella pines out in the Tuscan sunlight. As the website advertises, it has compressed air and electricity for "tools like air hammers, drills, grinders and chisels." The only problem was with the owner, who indicated that we could not use our conventional 3" angle grinders to work our pieces (website notwithstanding), could not park our car in the driveway that always had 3 empty places (despite few if any other parking spots in the area), could not clip the little tiles for mosaics with pliers on Saturday morning because the noise was "too loud," and other seemingly ad hoc rules that did not contribute to positive Karma (on top of gratuitously informing one of us, not me, that she did not like our piece). But, in fairness, communications issues may have caused at least part of the problem. The owner is French Canadian and did not seem to understand English that well, and we had no fluent French speakers, though some of us spoke at high school and / or college level. For example, we are still wondering about "Chicken Thursday," to which we were invited. We were told that the studio celebrates this event because the local market in PIetrasanta sells roasted chickens on Thursdays, and that everyone should bring something for the table. When we appeared at the table and were introduced to the owner and a number of her friends, however, there was no chicken on the table. Apparently we had been expected to provide the chicken as well, for everyone including ourselves and the circle of friends (though in candor it still remains unclear to us how the chicken was supposed to materialize). In any event, there is a nice little restaurant nearby, which we repaired to for our Pranzi di Lavoro, or working person's lunch (the restaurant is called Mariposa and is awesome). Net net net is, if you are looking for a well appointed studio, this may be it, but if you are looking for a nice studio where the owner contributes to a pleasant and positive stone sculpting environment, this may not be your place. It will not be mine again.
