About
A short distance from Nakatsugawa Station stands the ruins of Naegi Castle constructed 400 years ago and once home to the prominent Toyama Family. At the top of the complex, visitors can find a wellplaced observation tower, which offers an astounding view of the Nakatsugawa landscape as well as Kiso River.

We visited here in mid April when the cherry blossoms were just past their peak (lots of blooms and petals falling like snow). The entire hillside was covered in forests of cherry blossoms when you walk up the hill from the lower car park.
Great views of the entire valley.

We walked out and back. Found the map a little confusing at the start. It does not mark all roads. There are two T intersections going out. You turn right at the first one and a short distance later left at the next one. Took us an hour out and 50 mins coming back. Steep climb up through nice forest at the end. Stone work is Machu Picchu like and we found the ruins quite interesting. No English signage. Popular with local Japanese tourists the day we were there.

This is a very pleasant walk near Nakatsugawa. I took the bus out from the city and although it was still a reasonable walk (there were signs pointing the way when I left the bust but they disappeared not long after - just ask a friendly local which way to go). I would recommend taking the bus there as the hill to the top is steep from Nakatsugawa, quite steep in fact. It is easy to walk down the hill, through the trees and make your way back to Nakatsugawa on foot alongside the fields and the river. If you want to extend the walk you can turn right at the bottom of the hill and go down to Ena and back to Nakatsugawa from there making a round trip.
