About
The Belize Zoo is an institution that cares for over 150 native wildlife, and promotes Conservation, Education, Recreation, and Research. It is also the first nature destination in Belize that is accessible to visitors with physical disabilities. We are committed to the conservation of Belize's wildlife and its habitats through the establishment of a well maintained zoological facility and education center, both poised to bring about a greater environmental awareness to the people living in Belize, and to visitors from abroad. In 2014, the Zoo became the first nature destination in the country accessible to persons with physical disabilities. TBZ believes that by bringing the people closer to the animals, which are their natural heritage, they will feel proud of these special resources, and wish to protect them for future generations. All Zoo "residents" were once pets; donated to the Zoo; rescues found injured, abandoned or orphaned and brought in rehabilitation; or born at the Zoo. The Belize Zoo receives no financial support from the Government of Belize, and generates funding to care for its residents through admission fees, tours, donations, and adoption and membership programs.

- Dr_C_and_EOrange County, California378 contributions“VIP Tour” Priceless Experience“VIP Tour” at Belize Zoo was a priceless experience that everyone in our family (age 13 to 81) enjoyed! We cannot say enough positive things about the animal encounters that are part of this VIP Tour. Zoo Keeper Edward was our Guide and he was WONDERFUL; full of so much information about each animal. Belize is home to multiple species of wild cats (jaguar, puma, ocelot, jaguarundi) and the Belize Zoo is the rare place where you can see them up close.Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 1 January 2023
- Kwahi J18 contributionsThe best way to see Belize's fauna reliablyI really wanted my kids to see the small and large cats of Belize. I think this zoo was the most effective way to achieve that goal. We hired a taxi driver/tour guide who got us to the zoo before anyone else once we got off a ferry from San Pedro. It was great to see all of the animals. I wish we could do a safari to see all of the Belize fauna in their natural habitat, but this seems like the next most humane way to see the animals. As others have noted, it's worth spending BZ$20 for some long-lasting bug spray before you arrive so you can use it before you enter the zoo. P.S. We came to the zoo a few weeks after Hurricane Alice, so some animals were off-exhibit and the staff were still doing repairs. Even with those limitations, all of us thoroughly enjoyed the experience.Visited December 2022Written 2 January 2023
- RamadamaNew Providence, New Jersey2,262 contributionsLittle zooThis is a small zoo that takes about an hour to go through to see the animals...if we go slowly and take a lot of pictures. We saw a variety of local animals that live in Belize. The animals seem well cared for in this zoo. Children would love seeing these animals.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 January 2023
- PeteBaton Rouge, Louisiana1 contributionOur Trip to the Belize ZooThe day we went the Jaguar had been removed from his enclosure. All animals are in a natural environment. Monkeys were a blast. The zoo has a history of being a private rescue center before it became the Zoo. Very nice gift shop/canteen.Visited February 2023Written 15 February 2023
- Alexis4 contributionsSo many great animals! Try to go when they first open! This zoo was amazing! People kept saying that it was messed up from a previous hurricane and I'm sure that was true at one point, but they really had fixed pretty much everything except the Toucan exhibit by the time we went... the animals they had were breathtaking! It was so fun also to stay at their education center overnight (you can go to their website to book it) and we had a private casita and they served the BEST dinner and breakfast we had while we were in Belize haha. The one big piece of advice I would give for the zoo is get there when they open around 8:30am and then just wait for the zookeepers to start feeding the animals and kinda follow them around, cause that's when the animals know to be out is when they are about to be fed. We got to see tons of great activity this way and I heard from others that they animals tend to hide more in the afternoon.Visited February 2023Written 17 February 2023
- Linda SBrooks, Canada46 contributionsGreat little gemWe were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the zoo. A lot of detailed information on the various native animals. We learned about animals that we haven't heard of before. Friendly staff, and a nice little restaurant for a meal or a drink.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 March 2023

- Diane BAppleton, Wisconsin31 contributionsA Must See on your trip to BelizeAn excellent experience this past week as the only animals in the zoo are those who are being rehabilitated or have been injured/saved from the wild. It is more like a teaching sanctuary than it is a zoo. A must stop for at least an hour or so - a lot of shade here with native plants as well.Visited June 2023Written 11 June 2023
- GeneralShamuNew York City, New York1,058 contributionsAfternoon Visit to the ZooVisited here for a couple hours during the afternoon before we headed down to San Ignacio. Totally worth a visit though probably best in the morning when the heat and humidity is less oppressive. They also offer private tours that leave at either 9:00 or 9:30 daily (must book in advance). These tours provide you some intimate animal experiences!!!Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 July 2023
- worktotravel14Trenton, New Jersey2,219 contributionsGet to know the Belizean fauna and floraEspecially if you are taking any transport to or from the airport to the jungle areas of the zoo, this is an ideal stop. It is an introduction to Belizean wildlife, as well as, the overall ecosystem of the country. Taking a conservationist lens, the zoo is a no frills experience that is attendant to preservation of endangered animals rather than the entertainment of us lurkers. Still, you will get to see some animals that you might not otherwise experience unless you are planning a deep trek into rural areas and/or the jungle such as tapirs and leopards. The zoo takes great pains to build understanding of the animals and how humans affect them with an unapologetic lens. It is refreshing and also reminds us to respect all the parts of Belize that feel untouched and are. Wear mosquito repellent if you can and avoid shady areas to avoid most bug bites. This is also, for what it's worth, a great stop for a bathroom break or simply to visit the cafe which has little snacks if you are hungry after a long days travel.Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 August 2023

You'll love the signage, the info signs are expressed as if the animals are talking to you in the local parlance.
You can get there by local bus from the Belize Bus Terminal to Belmopan. About 45 minutes. Ask the driver to drop you off at the Zoo. $5BZ is better than a $100BZ taxi.

We had seen a sign for the zoo, the last time we were in Belize so we knew we had to check it out on this trip. Thanks to Albert of A Plus Adventures Belize for making this stop a part of a day long tour. Albert took us through the zoo, showing us the different animals, birds, etc. the zoo was so different than most because the cages were set up so the animals were in their natural habitat. It felt as if were walking through a rain forest. We did discover that Tapirs can shoot pee when one turned to walk away and hit our guide on the arm. The zoo is a stop I would recommend to everyone.

It is on the smaller side compared to many zoos I have been to previously and only took a hour and half to get through. The animal enclosures seem to be pretty much left to grow on their own so are very natural, which is great for the animals but can make it difficult to see/find the animals at times.

Sadly not great. The facility claims is there to help educate people about the animals but there was almost no information about the animals. The funny poems are okay but not educational.
I really wish I had learned more about the animals and that they had done any upkeep of the facilities. It was often so overgrown you couldn't even see any animals in their space.
The Tapir and Harpy eagle were the best part
They should build structure so there's more shade and benches in the shade to sit and I would have enjoyed the walk more plus they should post maps throughout We were very confused where we were going too many twist and turns though The twist and turns did make it feel more juggly We got lost several times and felt we were missing things.

Does anyone know what a taxi might cost from Goldson airport to the zoo, wait for us and then take us to our hotel in the city. Can you get taxis one way from the zoo to the city?
Thanks so much.

Hello,
My name is Deku and I was wondering what the estimated cost is to buy 2 female jaguars. The group I'm in wants to learn more about jaguars and the project we are doing for our class is to where we make an exhibit for an animal. Can you please help us with our project?

Hi - I note from some of the reviews that there seems to be a restriction on photography equipment, but i cant find anything on the zoo website. Can anyone give me more information. I was planning on taking me DSLR with an extra 300mm lens. I'm not a professional photographer.

I was just there this summer! I brought my DSLR with a 18-55mm and 55-200mm lens, and had no problems while there! You can get pretty close to the enclosures, and I got some fantastic shots!

Hi there!
We recommend an hour at the very least. 1.5 to 2 hours is ideal to tour the Zoo at a leisurely pace, especially in the April heat.
