Open air museum of the Amazonian people.
Mar 2020
From Fortaleza de São José, we took an Uber($4) 6 km SW to Monument Marco Zero, then 4 km N dropping us here. After registering with the attendant, we perused the map and began our stroll along the wooden paths of this 1997 museum. Its forested acreage provides lots of info on the Amazonian culture and biology to include housing, foods, trees, and turtles. We found it interesting with numerous descriptive signs in English and would be a fun and educational outing for children.
Its free with clean restrooms and available food.

Ethnographic museum
Jul 2019
This is an outdoor museum. You will see how traditional houses are build. And some traditional activities. The exposition is based in houses of different jobs or means of subsistence of the local population: fisherman, forester, hunter, midwife. It is very open and children can run around. I think they also organize some hands on experiences for the small ones sometimes. There is a restaurant but we did not try it. Toilets are clean and well maintained. You can write more about it in my blog.

Beware of mozzies
Jan 2017 • Couples
We had time to spare so popped in. It's free but lots of the areas were closed off. It was interesting to see the culture, plants and animals but very limited. There are ponds and loads of mosquitos. Wear repellent!

A Very Useful Intro to the Amazon
Dec 2014 • Couples
As we headed back home, we were very glad that we had chosen to have a guided tour of this facility early in our trip up the Amazon. It alerted us to things to do and to look for that we probably would have missed or not understood as well. The museum is actually a botanical garden that contains indigenous trees and plants with illustrations of how the native inhabitants utilized them. The garden contains replicas of various types of houses (a “river house,” a rain forest house, and a “birthing” house) as well as a manioc/cassava processing facility, and a Brazil nut “processing” demonstration. Sacaca is honored as a pioneer of natural remedies. Even though the exhibits do have brief explanations in English along with the Portuguese, we think that first time tourists (even if fluent in Portuguese), need a guide to appreciate fully what this garden and its exhibits offer.

Fantastic history for this location - see also the old fort for the delta entrance.
The city can be walked and people are friendly and smiling with great attitude to assist in any matter. If you don't speak Portuguese then bring a parlour!

Beautiful outdoor museum
Nov 2013 • Solo
Lovely combination of indoor and outdoor displays highlighting the lifestyle of the indigenous people. Gardens are full of local plants and trees and the guide spent a lot of time explaining their uses as well as the current ecological concerns.

Easy to access with good walkways, lots of shady areas and interesting and comfortable animal-shaped benches to rest and ponder the plants.

Good but expensive snack bar on site.
