Saw all the negative reviews but wanted to see it for myself. Not much I can say, there are a lot of stairs but the real issue I think are the monkeys and the fact that it's really really dirty and smelly. I'm not really squeamish but this place is dirty. It's such a shame because I think they can... More

I had almost declined a trip to Mount Popa, but I'm glad I didn't. The trip was definitely a highlight. While Popa is a significant tourist attraction with many busses arriving and departing, it is a beautiful little town with an amazing hike to the top. The shrines along the route (essentially an obnoxious staircase right up the mountain) are... More

It takes about an hour or so by car to get from New Bagan to the monastery at the top of Mt Popa. Many of the hostels in New Bagan will offer you the option of a half day trip out to see it. En route, you'll stop by an outhouse selling ginger jaggery and some stalls selling fresh fruit.... More

We got a taxi from Bagan to Mt Popa and it was worth every penny of it. The trip to the mount was interesting and the experience of climbing to the top was wonderful. There were heaps of steps, but they weren't as steep as they first appeared. They are under cover all the way to the top, kept clean... More

This was a perfect half day activity. The steps are easy enough to climb and the shops along the way at the bottom distract you a little thus taking attention away from the climb. There are many monkeys along the way though so be prepared for a little bit of monkey fun. They aren't too invasive and are nowhere near... More

Expecting the worst can make things seem not that hard. The walk up was completely covered so on a very hot day that was fantastic. The steps were well maintained and a hand rail was available. The monkeys were not as aggressive as we had been led to believe. The temple at the top was interesting and worth seeing. The... More

If you are getting a taxi from Mandalay to Bagan this is well worth visiting as it's pretty much en route. I would not go out of my way otherwise. It's a great photo shot from afar but unless you understand nat theology you will get little from the (kitsch) temples themselves. Monkeys are annoying as are the hawkers which... More

This place is better from a distance. Walking up there barefoot, in all the trash and monkey poo.. Its disgusting. Out of 8 countries that i have visited in SEA, this Mountain is the dirtiest place. And also the monkeys that the local people throw food at wich makes it even more dirty.. Monkeys with open wounds, bleeding and by... More
