The ruins of a former hunting lodge which was built in 17th century for Countess of Pembroke. Some features by Inigo Jones. Parking about 500m away then walk up. Well signposted & interesting signs. Maintained by English Heritage. No entry fee. Pleasant views

While out for a walk locally came across the ruins of Houghton House which is looked after by English Heritage. Entry is free and there are a few informative notice boards around the site. Great views over the surrounding countryside.

This is a lovely old building. It's easy to get to and park, and once you are there go for a good, peaceful walk.

There's an unearthly atmosphere here. The wind blows around the walls and can be quite cold. North facing house the north facing side of the hill. Uninterrupted view towards Bedford 10 miles away across the flat plain.

I saw two people with dogs at the house when we were there. The property adjacent does also have dogs, and they were pretty friendly.
