Farewell Spit Eco Tours began in 1946 as the mail delivery to the lighthouse keepers on Farewell spit. Farewell Spit is a nature reserve and bird sanctuary. Summer home to wading birds from the Arctic and also a growing Gannet colony near the end. Our hand picked local guides love to share their knowledge with people from all over the world, many of whom return on subsequent visits to our country.

Best 6 hour tour ever! Murray is a phenomenal guide, his passion for his work shows. We'll organized, clean facilities. Murray made sure we saw as many different types of birds as possible. Scenery is outer worldly. So lucky to have been able to go.

Everything was perfect. The organisation, the spots, the experience. Tip: Take some snacks with you. The tea, muffins and coffee are great, but if it is a warm day, worth taking water and soft drinks. If you are crazy about lighthouses like us, wait till everyone goes for the tea so you can spend time alone with the lighthouse :)... More

Not the cheapest trip but well worth it. A great guide/driver in Paddy giving informative commentary throughout. The route visits the top of the South Island before travelling the length of Farewell Spit with several stops en route before visiting the lighthouse to enjoy some excellent muffins with tea or coffee.

We drove to Collingwood on a rather testy drive via a twisty road with hairpin turns.we checked in with Farewell Spit Eco Tours which we had pre registered for the 1230 tour. We were in the Mary Ann which was an oldish 4 wheel drive bus that was quite comfortable and very serviceable. We had an initially cloudy day but... More

We did the gannet tour, fantastic, amazing lifetime experience. Company very easy to deal with, we had the tour then paid :-) as we were picked up at Farewell Spit. Most impressed with our guide Murray, very knowledgeable and personable. Nothing was a problem, lots of Kodak moments. We can highly recommend this tour.

We took this fantastic tour so that we could go out to the lighhouse on Farewell Spit which is one of the most northern points of the South Island. We took the half day tour as we needed to get back to Nelson but there is also a full day tour which continues after you finish the lighthouse tour. On... More

What an experience. We saw Seals, many different birds, visited a lighthouse and climbed sand dunes. Our driver had a great knowledge of the area, and kept you interested for all of the six and half hours. Great trip.

What a day! That was most definitely a highlight of our journey. We had the luck of being part of a small group with our wonderful driver Kersten Franke, who was a great host on this trip. He showed and explained everything to us throughout the whole day, never got tired of answering questions and enjoyed himself of the nature... More

This was a great day. So good. You get to drive along the beach and see seals, sand drifts, sand dunes and a lighthouse. Our guide was full of info and good fun. Make sure you jump down the huge sand dune. It's so much fun.

We "did" this tour many years ago, but went this time to share with our grand daughter. Naturally, we thought we knew it all - but Tony proved us wrong. Excellent commentary, fantastic driving in less than perfect conditions, and a friendly helpful manner. Since our last visit, the tour operators have become far more ecologically sensitive, which we appreciated.... More
