Leaving the Pelourinho, going through Rua Banana and visiting the church Nossa Senhora do Rosario it makes sense to continue further inland to visit the site of a former Franciscan monastery from the 17th century. Most of it had been destroyed and the whole place still feels a bit like ruins, but with Spanish help the church has been reconstructed... More

Ask about the story of the Priest who is buried outside the Church. It is very basic but it can transport you back in time.

These ruins are older than the Igreja Rosario, but there is not now much to be seen here. The area has been carefully excavated, and you can see where some of the foundation walls have been. There is more that could be done in the way of excavation and interpretation of the ruins.

The construction of this church started in the 17th century and it has served as housing for the Franciscan order and a training center for priests. It was damaged in the 18th century by fire. It has been recently refurbished and renovated with help by UNESCO. An excellent multi-language information panel stands in front of the church reciting this history... More

the convent itself is small and not so impressive, but the surroundings are beautiful. Also make sure on the way to it or back from it you take a Banana road with the small houses on both sides of the streets and lots of trees making nice shadow.
