these are the ruines of the first cathedral built in africa (as we have been told) the size is abnormally huge compared to the number of inhabitants in that village in those days. bit ridiculous

These are situated on the hill coming up the road out of Cidade Velha. The ruins consist mainly of walls and you can wander around at your leisure.

Although the cathedral is in ruins, there remain a number of tall walls and if you look closely you'll see some original tile and brick work. There's also original tombstones. This is the first cathedral built on the West African coast; construction began in 1556...More

This is a great example of a neat place that needs a tour guide. One of the local youth could cover it and make a euro or two per visitor. It's strewn with trash, wandering animals, but could be really nice.

Walk around the ruins - the cathedral must have been impressive for the time it was built. You do not really need a guide for it: there is a board in it which tells the history of the cathedral.
