This was our first visit to Mount Vernon. A very eye opening experience into the life of the elite during the colonial period. And even though he would have been considered a part of the elite - he sacrificed much for our country. We wish...More
Booked a tour time to visit the mansion on the property. Don't stress about making the tour time as it is self-guided and you will only be let into the mansion after the designated time. Tour guides were stationed throughout the mansion and were a...More
There was much to do and see at Mt. Vernon. My husband and I truly enjoyed visiting this historic site. The tour of the mansion was interesting and very informative. Our guide was knowledgeable and did an excellent job. We also took one of the...More
We finally made it to visit Mount Vernon and are very glad we did.
Having been to Washington several times Mount Vernon was on the bucket list, but we always got caught up in the sites of DC.....FINALLY we made it.

George Washington's home and estate are perfectly situated on the Potomac River, with sweeping views, well-tended grounds and buildings galore. The visitor center is well organized and the staff are very helpful. As you walk up to the main house, you're taken by the vast...More
If you just want to get the overall experience and say that you have been, you don't even have to do the mansion tour. We paid for our ticket, walked to the mansion, looking at it from the outside, walked to the backside of the...More
Great place to visit. Lot's to see. Guides were extremely pleasant. Be prepared to do a lot of walking if you want to see it all. Parking lot to the gust center was a hike, as was the walk then to visit the Washington's home....More
A long time item on bucket list. The view from the house is breathtaking. We went on the 9:15 tour with our guide Ellen. She was fantastic. The price and early time are worth it. A humbling experience to see the room and the bed...More
The formal tour is well-organized with timed-ticket entrances and then you’re free to explore the immense grounds on your own. There is scaffolding currently across the entire front of the mansion so photography is a bit challenging. However it is still completely worth a visit....More
The tour guide is the reason for 5 stars. The renovations took a lot away from the experience, but the tour inside made up for that. It has been years since I have been here. I'm really impressed with all that has been added.

The tour of the mansion is not a private tour; however it is a timed-tour. You will have to purchase tickets from the box-office for a specific time. The earlier you arrive at the site, the better of a chance to get in at a decent time. The rest of the property and museum is "walk trough at your own pace and it is mainly outdoors!" Well worth the walk around as the grave of Washington is part of the walking outside tour.

A simple answer is no to having the add-ons included in the general admission price. We did not use any of the add-ons and still found the place quite interesting. There is a lot to be discovered on a self-guided tour. You need to look closely at what the add-ons include and determine if they are worth the extra cost. Our general admission gave us a very nice overview of Mt. Vernon and in all the places there is signage to help you understand what you are looking at.
