We always visit here when we are in Martha's Vineyard. The cliffs are quite a sight but not as red as they once were. While you are there, climb to the top of the lighthouse, visit the Wampanoag museum and the shops mostly run by...More
Parking available by lighthouse and by the small collection of shops near the point. Simply gorgeous - you can also descend to walk the beach around the point. Just be aware of a few things: the fee to climb the lighthouse is $6pp. The small...More
SOME PLUSES BOOST THIS BEACH ABOVE THE REGIONAL AVERAGE, BUT….
….some negatives drag it back.
The Aquinnah area is at the island’s western tip. I took the fairly lengthy bus trip there to check MOSHUP. I’d heard it was a step up on the average...More
The Aquinnah Cliffs are absolutely gorgeous! We visited recently on a bus tour of the island, and we so glad this site was included on the tour. There is also a small shopping area with Aquinnah made arts and crafts.
The Aquinnah Cliffs are a truly outstanding venue on the Island. What is so important about the cliffs is that once upon a time they were called the Gay Head Cliffs and only Islanders like myself remember that important fact!

Lots of conflicting stories on this, but I was at South Beach when some locals showed me where a bunker was supposedly located just offshore. You can barely see it- supposedly some kids drowned by it many years ago so the blew it up to prevent future accidents. All you can see is a bit of Re-bar sticking out of the water. Not sure why there would be a bunker under water but that’s what they told me.

You can rent mopeds, but the busy roads are narrow and winding and there have been moped accidents on Martha's Vineyard, sad to say. I'd suggest taking a tour bus if you just want to go to the cliff lookout shops. You could always take public transportation back and forth via the VTA bus. Their schedules are on-line. If you want to make a day of it, many people rent a JEEP. I've always wanted to do that and I live here!
